How to reset device names?

Hi everyone,

related to this topic How to reset/rebuild entity names - Follow-Up? I am trying to reset the device names of my ESPHome devices. But I cannot find a built in option nor is it sufficient to delete the name in the rename option.

So how can I make Home Assistant check the device name the device supplies and use that again?

I think HA’s built-in recreate option will only rename to its naming template and not to what the device provides. I can see only two ways and both involve some careful editing: remove the devices, but I think the entities will remain in the registry (marked as deleted). IIRC I saw an issue recently with a request to properly delete old info like this, otherwise, when the device or entity comes back, you’re back to the old name. So, if you delete the device, you will need to manually clean out the core files under config/.storage or you keep the device, but perform the renaming by editing these files. Neither option is ideal if you have lots of these edits and editing these files are risky if you get the JSON wrong. Make sure you have working backups before attempting this.

As I typed, I remembered: Scan the Spook integration for perhaps better options. I don’t use Spook myself, but I know it provides some power functions.

Thank you for your suggestions.

I tried Spook but unfortunately it did not add anything related to my issue.

I also could not find any other way except really remove the entry from .config
Just deleting the device does absolutely nothing. It is immediately rediscovered and the last used name.

For me it would have made more sende to just remove the name by clicking Rename and then it would revert to the broadcasted one instead of “ESPHome”.

I will make a request and see if anybody agrees
