How to restore automation file from backup

How do you restore the automation file from a copy made with the new HA system from 2025? I have tried from configuration/System/copies but I can’t get the restore. Also, I think that at some point it has to ask me for the credentials to decrypt the copy, right?

Not a community guide. Moving.

You did save the encryption key, right?

I can’t answer your question because I haven’t used the new backup system. I prefer to continue using Samba Backup (or Google Backup) add-ons.

Even if you have the encryption key, I think you can’t restore a single automation. Just all of them.

For future use- install the Samba Share add-on and you can see your config directory on Windows File Explorer. I have a program (SyncBackFree) that copies the config directory to my NAS every morning at 3AM. If I mess up an automation or ESPHome configuration, I can easily restore them locally.

Settings → System → Backups.

Download the unencrypted backup.

Open the backup with any achieving software, like 7zip.

Open the homeassistant archive inside the backup archive.

Open the data folder.

Open the automations.yaml file with a text editor.

Copy the YAML of the automation you want to restore.

Paste it over the YAML of the existing automation.
