HVAC Air quality sensor for inline duct

Has anyone found an affordable and HA compatable air quality sensor that mounts inside a furnace air duct? The only options I find are over $600 and don’t easily work with HA without a ton of reverse engineering.

Not enough information. You will want to tell more about what you are looking for, what your considerations are, what was the $600 thing, what kind of problem(s) you specifically would like to solve, what kind of room or rooms, what do you have in mind, etc.

Also where you are and what your “HVAC furnace air duct” would look like. For example, if you think about it, in majority part of the world the central air HVAC setup is only for commercial buildings and factories.

My clean air intake is 5ft from my neighbor’s outdoor grill (and their favorite place to smoke pot). I want to close the intake damper when they decide to grill or flame-up. I can’t move the air intake vent, but I can close the intake damper for short periods. I am looking for an AIQ or VOC sensor that fits directly in the air intake duct so I can automate the damper.

I’ve found some examples are below, but are proprietary and very expensive:

Is there a HA-friendly option that is known to work? I don’t mind debugging, but I really need this to work without taking on a new hobby. The best I’ve found so far is from M5Stack: Air Quality Kit v1.1 with M5StampS3A (SEN55, SCD40) | m5stack-store, but it doesn’t fit a duct very well and I don’t have any feedback on how good the sensor works.

No experience on the specific Air Quality Kit, nor the use case… but I have good experience so far with m5stack’s product.

This likely will be a journey, and I suppose we all have to start from somewhere. I say go for it!!!

  • I am just curious how you’d plan to power the sensor - whatever you will have in the end - inside the duct?
  • Also look into the air quality sensors from IKEA or Apollo or SwitchBot… if not already.
  • Definitely come back and post photos and whatever you have achieved. Do you plan to trigger some kind of motorized duct damper… ?
