IKEA Parasoll door sensors battery drain problem

I might have been a bit too harsh on my previous statement.
I soldered a good 10 or so with the 10µ capacitator and made a little automation to tell me when they become unresponsive (usually due to low battery) I will then report back here (if i remember)

And after 51 days of testing the misbehaving sensor started to…. Well… Misbehave! It went offline and even reinstalling the battery didnt work. It appears as if the battery is fully depleted which is inderdaad the case after measuring it with a battery tester. The weird thing is that the other sensor is still working. That leads me to the conclusies that it is either coincidence OR there are more than 1 version of the Parasoll sensor…

That is pretty much what mine did. Worked fine but went dead flat, even when reporting 80% or more. At least you got 51 days out of yours!

So, would you be in the position to test soldering an extra capacitor?

Something like this post above, to address the noisy power inputs that randomly wake up the SoC, draining the battery as a result.

I’m sorry to tell my tests are not so hopefull aswell.

Here are some sensors which where replaced all about the same time. One is with the modification, can you tell? I couldn’t (and it’s not the green one).

Now lets check them all. (all with ladda 750 - charged with the IKEA charger)
Note, some batteries where replaced about 2 weeks ago. Just before I was away for more than a week.

Still completely unacceptable. The batteries should last for months, closer to a year… In total I bought like 15 of them, some not even mounted because of the issues (and possible mod).

I might try and add more batteries in parallel to see what happens.

Bummer. The guy who uploaded the video on YouTube claimed that the capacitor would address the issue.

and then there was a follow up comment under his follow up video:

Hmm…

3 months later, time for an update.

My bad-boy parasoll is still working!
It’s not on a door, just lying around on shelf upstairs (further away from the main controller btw).
Once in a while I open and close to sensor to see if the red light works.

So, let’s get to the result!

Blue is the bad boy, replaced its battery around 21 of april (month after the mod).
Orange is of a door downstairs between living and hallway, so opens a lot (and is within 1m of the controller).

You can see that the battery has been replaced, it lasted for about 10 weeks without issues.
Was replacing 22 aug, and now giving issues since 23 sept. 1 month only.
Both times we were away for more than a week during this period.

The modded version is lasting for 5,5 month now and still updating throughout the day/responding to open/close.
The original version longest period is 2,5 months the shortest 1 month.

So maybe the mod does work after all. The battery level is just not so accurate maybe, dropping form 85 > 50 overnight

Next I think I will place both sensors on the same door with fresh batteries.
Then when one runs out, I will mod the other one aswell and see how that goes.

Also chiming in here, I had a few sensors misbehave with crappy amazon rechargeables that stopped misbehaving once swapped with EBLs. I also ended up switching to z2m from ZHA which has made my network overall more reliable (have some sengled bulbs outdoor that ZHA could never keep hold of, but the z2m availability poll seems to have stabilized, not using availability for the parasolls).

They’ve been stable after ironing out the coordinator transition and letting the network settle, so I’m chalking this one up to poor quality rechargeables and some ZHA opinions on how the network should be run.

Does anyone know if, in the meantime, this issue has been fixed by Ikea? I need to equip a whole house with door sensors and my choice would be for the Parasoll due to the usage of AAA rechargeable batteries, but if the drain issue is still there I might have to make a different choice.

I’m unsure if it is fixed by IKEA in a new hardware revision. There has been no new software/firmware for the current version.

All I know is, the battery lifetime is too short. You will have to replace every 2 (max 5) months, depending on your network/activity of the door/window.

For me personally, that is way too short.
I bought like 15 parasolls, some are not even mounted because of this issue.
If I have to choose again I would not buy them although I’m not sure of a good replacement. Maybe the Tuya Zigbee version?

Ideally it would be based on Zigbee/Zwave, using AAA or AA batteries, have a battery lifespan of 1 year+.

Slightly offtopic, looking into an alternative:

Here are 2 Tuya/EWeLink zigbee doorsensors compared: Tuya door sensor - external sensor

Some info from another topic: A list of door sensor / reed sensor hacks! (Aqara, Xiaomi, others)

At least I do not see any battery issues in these topics

Both Tuya ZY-ZD02 and EWeLink MC500A/MC510A-A002 on AliExpress for around 5 euro’s. For me the EWeLink looks more promising since it’s a single PCB and somebody already took to time to measure power consumption. I think I will buy 1 of each and compare them next to the Parasolls.

I don’t think you can make such a sweeping statement. Maybe I just got lucky with my Parasoll, but the recommended IKEA battery has already lasted 8 months and is still at 47%.

Its hardly a sweeping statement when this is a thread about IKEA Parasoll door sensors battery drain problems. Most here have issues. So if you don’t, you got lucky!

I’m cycling mine out. I had one that wouldn’t pair one day after working for a while, so it went in the ewaste. Had another that was always flat within a month, so ewaste for that too. One that seems ok, so that is hanging around.

Just got a couple of BTHOME door sensors on the way to try, as I have ESPHOME BT proxies around. They use 2 x AAA and claiming 12 months battery life. So we’ll see.

Me either, haven’t seen anything to claim they have fix it anywhere. So not going to waste more money on them.

That said, the water sensors work well, no battery drain issue.

Since I have 10 of these units running for months, using new IKEA proposed batteries, using the IKEA charger, for several cycles. I think I can

I even modded one, which I currently have attached next to a normal one, both with fresh batteries. Let’s see what the 1 on 1 comparison is. But besides that, these IKEA sensors are really really bad battery wise. You can also read some reviews about that on their website (probably one of you guys).

But that said, if it works for you, tell me if you need some more for a good price hahah

I was referring to the generalization of the time specifications of 2 (max. 5) months. I don’t want to deny that these have massive problems in certain constellations. That’s obvious.

Thanks for the offer. I’d rather pass. I don’t want to push my luck.:wink:

I don’t think IKEA will take any further action; the Parasoll will be completely replaced by new devices (with matter over thread) by next year at the latest.

Today the EweLink arrived. Paired instantly.
It is actually identified as a SNZB-04 (which is officially a Sonoff SNZB-04), hhmm strange. Works anyway.

Will add it to that same door as the modded BadBoy and an original Parasoll (batteries changed okt 25). Which is next to the controller.

Now lets wait and see.

So, just to recap on the latest round of tests, essentially you have 3 door sensors on the same door, with one sonoff SNZB-04, and 2 of them being IKEA Parasoll.

Between the two Parasoll sensors, one of them being the blue “Bad Boy” sensor with the capacitor mod to reduce the noise, and the other one is the original Parasoll.

Do I understand your battery tests correctly?

I’m quite interested.

Correct. As in this picture.

Using Z2M (latest) using a SLZB-06 (latest stable firmwares), within 1 meter of that door. Besides these 3, there are 76 other Zigbee devices. Also quite some with batteries, like motion sensors (both IKEA and Philips). There is only this one wooden doorframe / panel between these 3 sensors and the antenna…

Fun fact, while testing the SNZB-04 I found out the OG Parasoll already dead… Tried the button on the back, nothing. Lasted 9 days. That is a new record! (the wrong record…)

That didn’t take long

  • MYGGBETT – Door/Window sensor. Detects when a door or window is opened or closed, and if connected to a smart system you can get notifications on your phone. Also works for spaces like walk-in closets, where it can trigger a light to turn on or off.

Some interesting looking sensors being released. But I might hold off buying until others have tested them, my luck with IKEA sensors is hit and miss.

Water leak ones have been great, but the door ones meh and motion ones, meh.

Wait - so those sensors are no longer zigbee?
Or maybe the sensors still are, but will become Matter comparable only when paired with the DIRIGERA hub? Is that how that works?

I guess we will know more in the coming days.
