Ikea TRÅDFRI lights & Google Assistant

Hi,

This isn’t a Home Assistant question, but is home automation related and this is the best place I know for such questions.

Ultimately my Ikea TRÅDFRI lights will be connected up via Home Assistant, but currently my Home Assistant is not working (yeah… I broke something), so they are just working stand alone with the Gateway.

When I upgraded my phone I noticed that Google Assistant on my phone could now control the lights via the gateway.

However, when I came to connect them up I was asked to “connect Google Assistant to my TRÅDFRI App”.

Because I like to know what is happening on my system I wanted to check what this means.
Is this actually what it says, and Google Assistant on this one phone will be connected to the TRÅDFRI app on my phone which is then connected to my gateway?
Or does it connect my gateway to a Google cloud service.

I don’t mind if I talk to my phone, then my phone sends this to Google for translation, the result of the translation is returned to my phone which then communicated with the gateway via the TRÅDFRI app internally on my network.
But I would be concerned if I was in some way letting the Google services communicate directly to my gateway. (I.e. Phone to Google Cloud then Google Cloud directly to gateway).

Hopefully I’m not sounding overly paranoid, I just like to know what is happening on my system, and more importantly know where any holes have been opened.
