Installation without router/wifi?

Hi,

I got an older Intel NUC and am not sure if I can set up a little home assistant thingy with just an Ethernet cable connecting the NUC and my laptop to access via LAN? Is that enough? Is there anything I need to different in this case?

Background:
I want a setup mainly for lighting control. Currently I just want to set up lighting scenes and have simple remote for them, while having the option to expand and add other stuff in the future.
I don’t really have stationary internet access rn because I live in a one-room-apartment and a big LTE plan and hotsports for my laptop are just much cheaper for me.
And I dont need to be connected with the home assistant super often, I just want to set up automations with remotes some times and then let the remotes handle it.

Would be very grateful for help/tips
Thank you very much

Home assistant needs an internet connection for initial setup, to get the current time from an NTP server, and for updates.

If you have connect to the internet only during the initial setup, you can still have offline access once you are set up.

For example, lights that work off ZigBee do not need internet access to control.
