I’m looking to use some of the HA-supported display units (Like the Sonoff) as intercoms.
I’ve seen the SIP cards but I’m wondering if the Sonoff can act as a “phone” device with that, and also it seems finicky to set up and maintain, so I was wondering if there were other options for two-way live communication - I don’t want to record and broadcast, I want an intercom.
Go the simple route. Get an intercom - that’s what they are designed for. A relay driven by a cheap ESPHome type device hooked up across the intercom push-to-talk button might do the trick. Building your own intercom with parts might be an exciting challenge, but remember the intercom manufacturer enjoys the cost benefit of volume of part purchases, and your time may not always be free.
I really want to avoid having multiple panels in each room, which is why I was looking for a solution that integrates with a panel like the Sonoff that has a microphone and speaker in it already.
