Is Backup or Storage to 2nd Internal SATA drive Possible?

Hi,

I think it’s safe to say that getting HA to recognize and allow use of a USB drive is like trying to stuff hot butter up a wildcat’s ass. Not gonna happen.
I’ve spent hours trying with formats, Fat, ExFat, NTFS, and even Ext4, No Go.

I tried to find an addon/integration/HACs solution, and either it’s well hidden or I just plain missed it.

Search engine searches reveal that “Frigate” users figured out a way to make a USB drive recognized for their purposes. Oh well.

Time to think outside the box, lol.

Common mini-PCs that are acceptable for HA, have 2.5 (or even NVME) 2nd Sata drive slots,.

Is there any way or workround to enable backup/storage to 2nd mounted internal SATA drive? This ought to be way easy, it’s just the “how to” that’s needed.

If not, has any thought been given to allowing use of 2nd Sata drive in a future HA upgrade?

Many thanks, for all your hard work !!!

Yikes, I forgot… Addendum: If it becomes possible, would 2nd internal Sata drive need to be formatted ext4?. Thanks again.

Is it possible, yes. Is it supported? No.

When you mount a drive, it becomes part of the data that gets backed up (without tweaking that). So if you have 1TB of music on a mounted drive, and have 256mb of space on your root server drive, Backup will fill up your root host drive and crash it all.

For that reason I don’t provide the links to show you how to do that, but the links do exist and take heed the warnings.

There are possibly other ways, don’t know, but mounting another drive can be a problem.

Docker documentation deep reading on your horizon I suspect, otherwise Google AI results may just lead you down some very black, nasty and heavily outdated rabbit holes. There are no short cuts - you have to understand what you are doing.

Thank you @Sir_Goodenough and @IOT7712

Good to know.

For now, I managed to make Samba work to backup to a flash drive mounted on an Asus router’s USB port. And so, that will have to suffice.

I should keep an eye out for any chance that backup becomes possible to the HA’s appliance USB port.

Many thanks for enlightening me !!!

Bonus. Backup device is physically seperated from the source, hence less risk for damage if power supply surge or failure takes out your HomeAssistant server.
