Is HAOS compulsory for a Voice Assistant?

I got an Echo Atom M5 to use as a Voice Assistant. I installed it and now need to set up a wake up word. To my surprise, the documentation says

Prerequisites

  • Home Assistant version 2023.10 or later, installed with the Home Assistant Operating System

I use HA with docker. Is my M5 useless? Or is there an alternate configuration?
