Joining secure zwave plus devices

When I joined my devices, I clicked the button to pair a secure zwave device. I don’t think they paired in a secure mode because it never asked for the five digit code for that device. I just let it go because I wanted all of my devices connected.

But now it’s been a few days and I’m thinking about why that didn’t happen? How do I pair zwave plus devices so they connect in a secure mode? Shouldn’t it ask me for that code?

No, S2 isn’t supported by OpenZWave at this time.

By using the “Add Secure Node” button.

Since S2 is not supported by OpenZWave, is there any difference in using the “Add Secure Node” versus the other one then?

You only need secure inclusion for devices like locks and garage door openers.

Ah ok. I guess it doesn’t matter, I used it for all my secure light switches and they added just fine - it just didn’t prompt me for the code. They work fine.

There’s no need to utilize security on switches, it increases the zwave traffic, instead of 2 packets you’ll be generating 8.

Thats good to know. So in the future if a network does support it, I should just join them (light switches only) with the non-secure route.

Only use secure for devices that require it, like locks or garage door openers.
