KNX ETS6 cloud vs local versions

While I’m learning this by trying and reading, I thought to share my experinces about ETS with others after few days of playing with it, maybe someone else has similar experiences.

There are three versions of KNX ETS6 configuration tool and two first ones (Lite 200€, Home 350€) are cloud versions for home owners, the third one (Professional 1000€) is full local installation for professionals.

I got the 350€ version that has 64 device limit. I was hesitant to buy it because of the cloud arhictecture but that pro is just too expensive imo at this stage. And my fears were correct, it feels very slow to use at daytime. And it crashes, the whole window just suddenly disappears and I need to restart it. It’s slow to start of course.

Does anyone else have similar thoughts / experience of those cloud versions? How the older versions were, did they sell full local version for home owners?

Hi !
I may have missed something, but last time I checked, the “cloud” stuff of ETS is only the license key - while the “local” thing has a USB stick holding the license key. So the software is exactly the same, but to start it, cloud license needs internet connection to verify license.

I own both, version 5 with USB license and version 6 as cloud license. It’s slow indeed, but I have not experienced any crashes until now.

PS: There is also a 4th version: “Demo” which allows 5 devices (or 10?) and is free of cost.

Well that’s interesting. Could I possibly acquire that USB-license and switch over to a local installation?

Well, went to the store and there is a dongle available. But they talk about cloud license and that can’t be the reason why it’s so slow. Not sure would that solve the issue, if the application is still running from cloud?

Add this option if you want to activate ETS with a dongle. USB dongle only used for licensing, no storage possibility.

AFAIK you can always transfer a cloud license to a dongle, but not the other way around - once dongle, always dongle.

But regardless of license, ETS doesn’t run on a cloud. It’s a local application installed on your computer.

Yes, that conversion was mentioned there.

Do you think the licensing is causing the sluggishness?

Absolutely not.

Yeah, it’s probably some encrypted small messages and I would assume it doesn’t do that all the time.
