Kwikset 916 Lock not working

I’m trying to include a Kwikset z wave lock, and can’t get it to work. I’m able to get it included, but the lock won’t lock or unlock from HA. I do have a security key set in my config.

I see this error concerning the lock node:

2017-08-31 17:23:30.684 Error, Node013, ERROR: Dropping command, expected response not received after 1 attempt(s)
2017-08-31 17:23:30.684 Detail, Node013, Removing current message
2017-08-31 17:23:30.685 Detail, Node013, Notification: Notification - TimeOut

My config looks like this:

zwave:
  usb_path: /dev/ttyUSB0
  network_key: "0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00"

Does anyone know what I need to do?
I’ve tried excluding the lock and doing a factory reset. I’m running HASSIO version 0.51.2

you need to generate a unique key. follow the z-wave device setup for Home Assistant found here: https://home-assistant.io/docs/z-wave/#adding-security-devices

I do have the network_key set. I have obfuscated the actual key I am using. But in my above post that is how I have the key set in the config.

sorry. I missed that line in your original post.

I too had issues adding my kwikset lock to the z wave network. I had to do an exclude (from the zwave stick and not home assistant) followed by a secure include (from home assistant frontend) and on the third time it finally worked. I was experiencing the same issues where it would fail and the log said “dropping command”. You say you got it included in the network but how did you include it? did you use the regular include, secure include, or did you take the zwave stick to the lock and include it that way?

I have the Linear HUSBZB-1 stick. This stick doesn’t have the capability to include/exclude directly from the stick. I did have the lock running on Smartthings. Before I added it to HA I did exclude it from Smartthings.

hi, i’m having issues pairing my kwikset deadbolt (signature series) lock with the linear HUSBZB-1 stick. How did you pair them? Or is it only by inclusion through configuration? How did u add the lock to HA?

Use the Add Secure Node button in HomeAssistant to add the lock.
The lock will show up in the <> menu as lock.something_locked once it’s ready.

how to know what to add? i don’t see any device id with the lock? Its just a kwikset deadbolt signature series. Don’t think HA is detecting it.

I did a factory reset of the lock. Maybe that’s why its not getting detected?

hi, cant pair kwikset lock with the HUSBZB-1 stick, do I need to get aero stick so that it can pair? I did factory reset of Kwikset, also set network_key, but when i use add secure node, nothing happens and the lock doesnt show up in hass UI. Any suggestions?

You need to push the button on the lock to pair it. Check the manual.

Ya did that but I don’t think it pairs with Linear HUSBZB-1. Maybe I need a different z-wave stick. My Linear HUSBZB-1 is attached to a Pi.

The HUSBB-1 works. I got it to work. It took a few attempts of including and removing. Make sure you are including it using “Add Node Secure” and that your network_key is in the correct format.

So this is my .yaml

zwave:
usb_path: /dev/ttyUSB0
network_key: “0x6D, 0xAB, 0xBC, 0x90, 0x8E, 0xF1, 0x95, 0xD5, 0xCB, 0xE0, 0xF6, 0x57, 0xAC, 0x69, 0x16, 0x48”

So do u mean few attempts of including and removing the lock and using “add node secure” for lock right? I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

after clicking “Add node secure” when i check log, i see this:

Few attempts of “including and removing” the lock right?

can someone please help me? should i get some other zwave stick?

hey thanks! finally I could add after few times of adding/removing the lock. Initially my pi and lock were both very close to my router, then after moving it worked. Not sure if it was the reason.

Radio waves are sensitive to EMI even if it’s another frequency. Glad you got it sorted.

I had the same issue when trying to add my kwikset 916 dead bolt; it would let me add it however would not let me control it. The issue lies in how the z-wave is initially setup.

If you have already set up your z-wave network and have added zwave: code to the configuration file follow these steps to fix your secure devices:

Step 1: Remove your secure devices from the z-wave network by selecting the node and clicking “remove node” (Follow each devices remove from network instructions).

Step 2: After you have removed the devices from your network. Remove the z-wave code you manually added to any configuration/option file.

Step 3: Go to Configuration>Integrations> Delete the Z-Wave Integration
(Note: This will not affect your existing devices, they are stored on your Z-Wave Stick.)

Step 4: Go to Supervisor>System>Reboot

Step 5: Create a network key
(There are many ways to generate one however I just changed some of the characters of this example one I found)
0x67, 0x8b, 0x93, 0x5d, 0x84, 0x8b, 0x58, 0x31, 0x06, 0x08, 0xe9, 0xf7, 0xaa, 0x60, 0x9d, 0x5e

(Note: There should not be a z-wave integration after reboot, also your configuration files should be z-wave free at this point)

Step 6: Go to Configuration>Integration>Click “Add Integration”>Add Z-Wave>A dialog box will pop up with 2 text boxes, Path & Network Key

Step 7: For Path Enter: /dev/ttyACM0 For Network Key Enter your network key without parentheses
Example: 0x67, 0x8b, 0x93, 0x5d, 0x84, 0x8b, 0x58, 0x31, 0x06, 0x08, 0xe9, 0xf7, 0xaa, 0x60, 0x9d, 0x5e

Step 8: Start the Z-Wave network and add your secure devices that you removed using Add Node Secure.

Hope this Helps!
