Lamp brightness changes without any automation trigger

Hello,

I have a number of lamps set up directly in HA using zigbee including ikea lamps and hue lamps. I have a set of three outdoor hue lamps that I have configured to go on near sunset and some automations to control their brightness.

The first automation is a simple “when sunset” then turn on lights (a light group) with brightness set to 76. The same happens in reverse at sunrise.

However, one of these lamps has an issue that it will consistently have its brightness increase to 60% at some, seemingly random, time after it is turned on. No other lamp has this issue.

I set up a sensor (viewable in the “states” dev tools menu) to track this and can see it changing, but do not know how to find the reason for the change.

This lamp was originally set up in the hue app, but some time ago I stopped using the hue bridge in favor of just connecting directly to HA (green) and the zigbee setup there. Could there be some setting lingering from the hue setup? Is there some way to track what is causing the brightness change?

Thank you.

I’ve taken my sizable number of Hue bulbs through several hosts over time. I had a few that acted out randomly, similar to your experience. Drove me nuts.

Despite resetting them more than once, only when I did a tedious reset of those lamps did they stop acting up. If one of the bulbs was once part of a group, I’d reset the rest of those lights as well (even if they’re not currently grouped).

Tedious reset steps:

  • Note current name of device
  • Delete device from ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT
  • Unscrew or ‘de-power’ lamp
  • Screw it back in to give it power
  • Factory reset bulb (I used a hue 4 button dimmer to reset)
  • Unscrew / de-power lamp
  • Power up lamp
  • Re-pair lamp with ZHA or Z2M, name it as it was before

This was solely about Hue bulbs, can’t speak to how that works out with any other manufacturer.

Sounds like the best candidate is that is still controlling it.
