Light turn on from event that is not there

Hello all,

I have this ongoing issue with one lighting group that happens regularly, everyday, several times.

I have two Ikea trådfri lights in a group in my laundry. They have three different ways to turn on. Two different motion sensors by two different doors of entry and one switch. Sometimes these lights turn on even tho there is no one triggering motion.
If I check lights log it says that motion triggered on event, but when I check motion sensors log, there is no “motion detected” event at that same time. What could cause this behavior?

One motion sensor is Smartthings motion sensor, and one is Ikea Trådfri sensor.

Greatly appreciated if anyone can give any hints how to debug this.

Automations are simple if motion is detected by either motion sensor lights turn on between 06.00-22.00 and off if motion not detected in 1 minute.

Actually, seems to be that it is the Ikea motion sensor that triggers the lights even tho it is impossible for that to be first to detect motion when someone enters the laundry during the night for example. Ikea motion sensor is next to bathroom door that has entry only from laundry and laundry needs to be entered first past the Smartthings motion sensor.

PIR sensors can false-trigger, for instance when there’s a draft in the room.

A spinnibg drum in a washing machine can also cause the machine to move a e in fact also shake the entire wall, which will look like movement when the PIR is also shaken.

For example this morning everyone was still a sleeping when it was triggered. Only thing that may be cousing any movement is oil furnace in the room behind the wall, but burning flame shouldn’t shake the wall. Have to investigate this further tho. Thanks.

It is always a hunt for clues with such things.

I had a PIR that activated in the morning due to the garbage truck emptying the garbage bins.
The truck engine itself can make the walls shake a bit, but it was the arm lifting the vibs and shaking them to get the garbage out that did the activating.

PIR’s don’t “see” motion, they “see” temperature differences. So it could very well be that because of the oil furnace, the wall warmed up causing the PIR to trigger.

If they are shaking then the temperature areas will change and that is the motion they see.

But you are correct that there have to be a heat difference between some of the things in the area for that to happen.
If everything is 21 degress celsius, then no area will stand out.

Post your (formatted) automation and the history for both your sensors.

If it’s going temporarily unavailable and your automation doesn’t explicitly exclude the unavailable state, then your automation will fire and cause the lights to turn on.
