@ArnoBrando thanks, that allowed me to find it. I have to test on Monday but I think that’s also unlocked now

Congratulations, this is a huge step. A week ago the question was whether the session could be opened at all, and now you have a generic write engine that handles curve, hot water, cooling and operation mode, with a strict success rule (exact republish, no unrelated word changed), plus recovery from a controller restart without rebooting the ESP. That success rule in particular is what makes the results trustworthy. And publishing Eco profiles with a handover file so others can pick it up is very generous. Thank you, also on behalf of Eco owners.

I have read through the iTec Eco folder and the evidence note. A few things from the Eco 8 side that may help.

Room setpoint on the Eco is already controllable without a session. You already have B3B1 in your findings, but for Eco owners reading along it may not be obvious that this is a working control path: on my Eco 8 the room-sensor slot 0x0A has been my everyday control since 22 September. Returning B3B1 with a whole-degree value makes the controller adopt it as the room setpoint (B3C5 echoes it back), and that drives a normal climate entity in Home Assistant. So on the Eco, 03F4 is still a sensible first write to validate the page path, because I can cross-check it against the 0x0A path, but the real gain for Eco owners is everything 0x0A cannot reach: operation mode, hot water enabled/mode, top-up, the curve.

ECO-WRITE-01. I plan to run the equivalent of your ECO-WRITE-01 on my Eco 8 with my own tooling (USB/TCP adapter, not the ESP build), using the same R1 body, replay on challenge #3, no ACK, positive = 03E8/count14 within 10 s, and report it under that name. One detail matters here: my controller sends only 6 challenges in about 21 s after a cold start, so of the two ordinals where the genuine Eco 5 gateway answered (#3 and #29), #3 is the only one I can use. And my challenges looked like noise (6 of 6 unique, no date/time structure), like the Eco 5 ones and unlike your XTR ones, so this tests replay tolerance in exactly the case your PROTO-OFFLINE-02 leaves open.

Top-up question. The canonical state still lists 0430 as TEST, while the Write Beta README says top-up works but blocks the write system. Was 0430 confirmed by an actual toggle with the display showing extra hot water on and off? And what does “blocks” look like on the bus, the 0708 mailbox staying busy until the top-up cycle ends, or something else? From my side, one possible passive indicator: when I started a top-up from the panel, 0x0A B3C6 (46022) went from 0 to 2 within a minute and dropped back to 0 a few seconds after I ended it, about 67 minutes later. Otherwise it sits at 0. That is a single occurrence, so only a candidate, but it is visible in the room-sensor slot without any session.

ArnoBrando: thanks for the email, I have replied there. The attachment was the older 26 September file, so I asked for the log from #34 again. Once it arrives I will share it here, because it shows the app changes (operation mode, hot water on/off and mode, interval, curve, min/max) on an Eco.

I ran your ECO-WRITE-01 on my iTec Eco 8 today. Three transmits, all negative, and I think the result explains the whole XTR-versus-Eco question.

Setup: my own USB adapter rather than the ESP build, one single R1 frame per boot, no FC16 ACK, no mailbox reply.

  • 12:49, challenge #3 at +9.85 s after bus return, replayed the pair-1 body 1691...A3D5, 32 ms after the challenge. No 03E8/count14.
  • 13:18, challenge #1 at +1.14 s, same body, 37 ms, and this time under your exact EXP386 guard state A80E=0000 / A80F=0005. No 03E8/count14.
  • 13:30, challenge #3 again, this time the pair-3 body 792F...E167, 31 ms. No 03E8/count14.

In all three the controller behaved bit for bit as if I had sent nothing: it finished its usual burst of six challenges at about 4.25 s spacing, went quiet, and made the same A80E 0 -> 8 transition at the same moment as in a no-transmit baseline recorded minutes earlier. No display message, no Online/Link error.

I ruled out the boring explanations before concluding anything. My transmit physically reaches the bus: the same adapter in the same session got 10 of 10 replies from 0x1E to an injected FC04 read. The frame is byte-identical in shape to the genuine gateway, 0F 17 10 plus 16 bytes plus CRC. The delay sits inside the genuine 30 to 63 ms window. I tried both ordinals where the real gateway answered. And two things I had assumed might matter turned out not to:

  • Prior presence is not required. In two of the four successful responses in the 28 September capture, the gateway had transmitted nothing at all since the bus returned, and its response was still accepted about 10 s later. That is exactly my scenario.
  • The 0x06 accessory is irrelevant. In both of those captures slot 0x06 is polled 326 and 271 times with nobody answering, while the gateway works fine. So the EXP entry some of us can produce on the VERSION screen is a different accessory with a much simpler presence protocol, not a prerequisite here.

That leaves the response value itself, and this is where it gets interesting. I compared the challenge bodies byte by byte across three installations: 16 challenges from my Eco 8, the 8 local XTR ones in your logs, and the 6 genuine Eco 5 ones.

  • my Eco 8: zero of 16 byte positions constant, each position takes 14 to 16 distinct values
  • genuine Eco 5: zero of 16 constant, 6 of 6 distinct everywhere
  • your XTR: ten of 16 positions constant, and the variable ones are the year, hour and day fields you already identified

So the XTR is not really issuing a challenge. It sends a mostly static, clock-derived block, and its firmware evidently does not verify the response against it, which is exactly why one fixed replay keeps working for you. Both Eco generations draw a full fresh 128-bit value every time, which strongly suggests the firmware does verify. My three negatives are the behavioural confirmation.

If that reading is right, your conclusion that breaking the crypto is probably unnecessary holds for the XTR, but for the Eco family the crypto is the gate. I would rather be wrong about this, so one experiment on your side would settle it, and your handover already lists it as untested: does your XTR accept sixteen arbitrary bytes, for example all zeros or random, in place of a genuine recorded response? If yes, the XTR simply does not validate and the picture is complete. If it rejects arbitrary bytes but keeps accepting that one recorded body against any challenge, then something challenge-independent is embedded in the response, and that would be a lead for the Eco side too.

Two smaller Eco findings from the same session, both from the panel rather than a session:

Top-up. I now have a second clean case of the flag I mentioned in my last post. 0x0A B3C6, my register 46022, went 0 to 2 thirteen seconds after I enabled TOP-UP on the panel, and back to 0 in the same second that I interrupted it. More useful for your map: 0430 is not the running state. Throughout the whole top-up my hot water page, your 042E/count15, kept word 0430 at zero. On the Eco panel TOP-UP behaves as a one-shot command rather than a switch: you set it to ON, the controller takes the job, and the field reads OFF again when you go back in. So a write to 0430 is probably a request to start, and nothing will report it as active. B3C6 is where the running state shows, and it needs no session at all.

Operation mode. Switching the mode on the panel, hot water to off and back, never put the mode page on the bus. Across twelve minutes of recording the panel pushed only the hot water page and @2143. So on the Eco the panel does not publish 0553 at all, which matches the mode being unreachable for those of us without a gateway, and makes it the most valuable thing in the capture the Eco 5 owner recorded for us.

Your Eco result fits my reduction remarkably well. We had independently concluded that the XTR 071C body is strongly structured/time-derived rather than a 128-bit random nonce; in our eight XTR samples ten bytes are constant, and two of the remaining varying positions are themselves deterministic functions of another varying byte.

I agree that the Eco result makes request-dependent validation the leading explanation there. I would keep one distinction open on the XTR: a fixed genuine response working against multiple requests does not yet distinguish “no validation” from a challenge-independent token or partial validation. Rather than jumping straight to all-zero, I may first flip a single bit in the proven R1 under the exact same cold-start guard. That should tell us whether the R1 content itself is validated and gives us a path to map which bytes matter.

Your TOP-UP observation is especially useful for my side: I already had 0430 as the strongest TOP_UP candidate, but your result strongly suggests it is a momentary request, not the running state. B3C6=2 looks like the better active-state carrier. I need to change my planned XTR test accordingly.

I have also been digging further into the firmware side. For the DHP-AQ/Atec lineage the official hardware documentation puts DCM03 directly on the heat-pump communication bus, so DCM03 firmware is now my strongest candidate for where the real Eco response algorithm lives. I have an exact classic DCM firmware fingerprint (2.0.17) to hunt for, and the modern Connect documentation also explicitly mentions downloadable “protocol packages”. That may ultimately be a better route to the Eco algorithm than trying to infer it from six pairs.

Your single-bit-flip plan is a better experiment than the all-zero one I suggested, and I want to say so plainly. All-zero only answers yes or no on whether anything is validated. Flipping one bit at a time in the proven R1, under the guard that already works, answers that and also maps which bytes are actually checked. That is strictly more information for the same number of runs, and if some positions turn out not to matter, the shape of what remains is a real clue. I withdraw my version in favour of yours.

Your point about the varying XTR bytes being deterministic functions of each other is interesting, and consistent with what I see on my side: my sixteen samples have no constant positions at all, and I cannot find any relation between positions. So the two generators look genuinely different in kind, not just in entropy.

One correction I should offer, on the firmware target, because I think the evidence points somewhere other than DCM03.

The gateway that demonstrably answers an Eco challenge is a Thermia Connect, firmware 2.1.105, on an Eco 5 whose controller runs 2.3.2. That is what the Eco 5 owner has, and it is the only device any of us has ever observed computing a correct response, six times across two captures, locally, in 30 to 60 ms.

The DCM03 at version 2.0.17 appears only on the ATEC, where, as I posted earlier today, the controller never issues a challenge at all, not even on a cold start. So we have no evidence that DCM03 implements the challenge, and a fairly strong reason to think it may predate it: the mechanism is present on Eco 2.3.x, present but degenerate on your XTR 2.4.2, and entirely absent on the older ATEC. An accessory from the older generation would have had no reason to carry it.

If that reading is right, the Eco response algorithm lives in Thermia Connect rather than in classic DCM03, and the downloadable protocol packages the Connect documentation mentions are the better hunt. Which I notice is what your own PROTO-OFFLINE-15 priority table already says, with the Connect packages at the top and classic DCM03 below, so perhaps this is only a matter of which line of that table to pull on first.

One concrete lead that costs nothing: the ATEC owner has an installer account on Thermia Online, and mentioned it in the GitHub thread. Installer accounts sometimes expose service and firmware downloads that normal accounts do not. Worth asking him to look before anyone spends more time searching public mirrors.

On TOP-UP, glad it was useful. One extra detail in case it helps you design the XTR test: throughout the entire top-up, the whole hot water page stayed unchanged with 0430 at zero, and the state showed up only in the room-sensor slot. So on the Eco it looks like a write to 0430 would be a request to start, and nothing on that page will ever report it as running. I now have the start and end to the second on two separate occasions, nine days apart.

Finally, a note on the crypto question itself, since I have been assuming it was worth attacking. I no longer think collecting more pairs will get anyone there. If the transform is a keyed block cipher with a fixed key, no number of request and response pairs recovers the key, and all extra samples can do is test structural hypotheses. That makes your firmware route the one that can actually finish, and it moves the needle for every Eco owner rather than just for one model.

Edit: the main claim in this post is wrong and I am correcting it below. A classic
DCM03 has since been observed answering a high-diffusion challenge on an ATEC, so
the response algorithm is not exclusive to Thermia Connect, and Connect is not the
only firmware target. See my later post in this thread.

I have to correct the post I made here a few hours ago, and the correction goes
against me on both counts.

I argued two things: that the challenge is a feature of newer controller firmware,
absent on the ATEC, and that Thermia Connect is the only device ever observed
answering one, which made it the only firmware target worth pursuing. A full ATEC
cold start posted in the integration discussion on GitHub this evening, recorded
with the sniffer running before the pump was powered, shows both statements to be
false.

The ATEC controller does send the challenge, 0.92 s after the bus comes up, and the
classic DCM03 answers it 29 ms later with the usual 16-byte reply. One challenge
only, answered at once, no retries, and the body is high-diffusion rather than the
clock-like pattern the XTR emits. The reason it had never shown up before is that
the window is about a second wide and the earlier captures all started later than
that. My “zero challenges in five of five recordings” was an artifact of when those
logs began, and I should have checked where each one started before generalising
from them.

So the algorithm lives in DCM03 as well, which was ryckema’s position before I
talked him out of it. I am sorry about that, particularly as he had reasoned his way
there from the hardware documentation rather than from a capture.

The practical consequence is better than what I claimed yesterday. A used DCM03 or
Danfoss HP-kit is a far more reachable object than a 7481 SEK Connect, and it is now
a legitimate candidate for a device that can answer a challenge on a bench.

Two limits I want to state in the same breath, so the correction does not swing too
far. A DCM03 answering an ATEC challenge does not yet show it would answer an Eco
challenge; those are different controller generations, and my Eco 8 clearly verifies
the answer, since three replays of genuine recorded responses were refused here. And
nothing in this changes the layer model I posted earlier: transport open,
session gated by the challenge. It only changes which devices are known to hold the
key to that gate.

The same capture also contains the first complete native session recorded with a
real DCM03 from the very first frame, and the first observation of a mailbox word
that had been recorded as never yet seen non-zero, pulling the page that carries the
operating mode. Both of those are in the GitHub discussion with the byte detail,
since they belong with the emulation work rather than here.
