Logic help with stairs

I am trying to put motion sensors on the stairs to have wall sconce on my stair landing to turn on when walking down the stairs or up. I want to avoid it turning on when people are walking by in the hallway. Attached is the rough layout. Id appreciate help with motion sensors and logic for the automation. The right stairs is the higher stairs.

Thanks

It may be beneficial to elaborate on what brand and type of sensors you plan to use. Zigbee, Z-Wave, WiFi etc…

Narrowing the detection field is going to be an issue. It may take blocking a portion of the sensor. You can test with tape.

This isn’t possible unless you cover only the stairs with the PIR detection zone. Even then people will be walking up/down the stairs in the dark for a second or so before the light turns on. PIRs require you to cross their detection zones before they trigger.

You could maybe use uWave sensors half way down the stairs pointing up and down and tuned for the exact distance of the stairs.
