I recently bought a Home Assistant Yellow with the Compute Module 4 (CM4) – 8GB RAM and 64GB eMMC .
I’m currently looking for a compatible 4TB M.2 NVMe SSD to install on it. My goal is to take advantage of the fact that HA will be running 24/7 and use it as a Time Machine backup destination for my MacBook Pro.
From the compatibility list on the HA website, it seems like the largest supported drive is 2TB, but I was wondering if anyone here has successfully used a 4TB NVMe and could recommend a model?
Alternatively, I was considering using a Crucial BX500 4TB 2.5” SATA SSD, connected via USB.
Any advice, suggestions, or experience would be greatly appreciated!
well, if these backups are important to you then i would only use (any) device with at least raid1 (NAS), so (at least) two hdd’s in mirror. If that 4TB ssd dies on you …
Actually, the Time Machine backup on Home Assistant isn’t mission-critical — I already do regular backups on two separate USB drives.
This setup is just meant to give me a daily automatic backup so I don’t have to worry if I forget to plug in the external drives for a day or two.
I’d just like to know if there are any compatible 4TB NVMe SSDs for the HA Yellow, or if it’s more reasonable to just go with a 4TB SATA SSD (which is also cheaper than most M.2 drives).
Well, in this case there’s one option: buy 4TB NVMe, try and if it works you’re a winner, but if it doesn’t then buy a case for M.2 and you’ll have external one. I’d do that…
Many times things work when company says it doesn’t. Like on my synology nas: max. supported additional ram stick is 8GB, but i have 16GB installed and works like a charm…
