Looking for Outdoor IP65+ Smart Lock Recommendations for Home Assistant

Requirements:

  • IP65 or higher weatherproof rating
  • Local integration with Home Assistant (no cloud dependency)
  • Premium/high-end options preferred
  • Protocol preference: Zigbee2MQTT, Matter over Thread, or WiFi with local control

Research So Far:

I’ve narrowed down to these top candidates:

Matter over Thread Options:

  • Aqara U400 - IP65 rated, Matter over Thread, premium build
  • Aqara U200 - IPX5 keypad, Matter certified, Apple HomeKey support
  • ULTRALOQ Bolt Fingerprint Matter - IP65 weather-resistant, Matter protocol
  • Nuki Smart Lock Ultra - Matter certified, “Works with Home Assistant” program

WiFi Options:

  • Aqara U100 - IP65, operates -35°C to 65°C, built-in WiFi + Zigbee
  • Schlage Encode Plus - ANSI Grade 1, WiFi + Matter, operates to -35°C
  • Yale Assure Lock 2 - Modular design (can swap WiFi/Matter/Z-Wave modules)

Challenges Found:

  • Pure Zigbee locks with IP65+ rating and Zigbee2MQTT support are nearly non-existent
  • Many “outdoor” locks assume interior side is protected
  • Aqara locks use encrypted Zigbee (won’t work directly with Zigbee2MQTT)

Questions for the Community:

  1. Has anyone successfully installed any of these locks in fully outdoor applications (both sides exposed)?
  2. Any experience with Matter over Thread reliability for locks in Middle East heat conditions?
  3. Are there any other IP65+ rated locks I’m missing that have solid HA integration?
  4. For those using Aqara locks, how’s the local control working through Matter or HomeKit bridge?

Looking to finalize my choice soon for a gate installation project. Any real-world experiences would be greatly appreciated!

I would go one step further with the question of what type of door are you trying to secure, is this a gate like or an actual gate?

edit: just came across this one that may fit the bill for folks also looking into one.

thanks for the reply but i am looking for door lock not gate lock as i have mentioned in the post. But again, thanks anyway. and do let me know if you have used any of the lock mentioned above or anything else.

I am searching for the same thing for months and have not found a single solution so far. I just posted the same search request on Reddit, before finding this thread.

Basically, whenever there is an IP rating it is just for the keypad, never the actual lock, making it unsuitable for a door where booth sides are outdoor.

yes you are correct. i still didn't found anything like that. Do let me know if you find something like that. Would really appreciate.

Coming back to this thread. You still have not answered my initial question.. what type of gate project is this for? we need to understand the exact setup you are working with to better answer you with options as they become available.

I am assuming that @AJ_Network and me having the same type of door. As descriped in the inital post, it is a door whose both sides are outdoor, where no weather protection is given, hence the need for IP rating. Those are doors to get on a property/yard.

So its a gate.. that is what we call a door that is setup outdoors when its not specifically for a building entrance.

What I ask for is information on the TYPE of gated door it is, if people are not willing to provide information that is asked for then most of us are not able to better advise on what product may suite the needs based on availability in the persons region.

The first device I posted in a reply is specifically for outdoor use.

The device you linked to does not exist. It was a Kickstarter campaign that failed.

If we can't find any suitable devices for any kind of gate door, then further gate door details that limit options don't suddenly help us find one.

Also again.. we need details as we can't read your fecking minds on what you have.. I am getting sick and tired of people asking for help and advice but give no further information when we ask for better clarification and details on the projects.
