I’m trying to find round smart plugs that function completely on local control. I have ESPHome & MQTT devices, so that is not new to me. I would prefer if they need to be “Tazmotized”, that no breaking of the enclosure or wiring reconfiguration is required. Power monitoring is not needed. I also have some Tuya switches that are controlled with the LocalTuya integration but I would like to avoid dealing with the SmartLife app and that whole annoyance. I’ve seen some Martin-Jerry plugs on Amazon that have Tasmota pre-loaded. Is this my best option TASMOTA Martin Jerry Mini Smart Plug, Smart Home Devices, No Hub Required (4Pack), or is there something better?
Wow, sounds like a very good fit to your requirements. And the price is certainly decent. ($7.50 ea)
I already own several other Martin Jerry Tasmota devices, & have had excellent experience with them. I had seen these devices myself awhile back, & considered buying a 4-pack, due to the good price for local-control smart plugs. But I’ve already got enough smart plug spares.
Bottom line re your question: I certainly haven’t seen anything else that meets your criteria so well.
I ended up buying a 4 pack of those MJ plugs. The only downside I have with them is that they block adjacent receptacle slots, i.e. If you use it on a duplex receptacle, only the part with the smart plug is accessible. In one instance, I moved it to a corner port of a nearby 6 port surge protector and it blocks 2 of the adjacent ports (1 on the side and 1 above).
I’ve never purchased round smart plugs, so wasn’t aware of that space constraint. I guess that would explain why so many vendors do rectangular or square format, so they don’t interfere with each other.
I have rectangular smart plugs as well. I was searching for the round plugs because I needed to use some in outdoor locations that have weatherproof covers. These are too limited in space available for the larger rectangular plugs to work. The round plugs work in these areas, however they block the other receptacle port on duplex receptacles. Now a great product idea would be a duplex smart plug that preserves the form factor of the receptacle it plugs in to.
I do have a couple small square smart plugs which can fit two onto a duplex outlet. They are Zigbee units from Innr.
And of course there are smart outlets, which replace the whole outlet in the wall. But I agree, a unit that just plugs over the outlet plate, that just turns the two sockets into a smart duplex plug, would be great.
