Lost my key for backup

Hello.

I’ve been using an HA system for five years. I’ve always made backups, and I’m doing the same today. Unfortunately, I had a power outage yesterday and my Home Assistant won’t start. So, the backup… and that’s the problem, because I don’t have the key. Unfortunately, I didn’t save it.

My instance was hosted on VMWARE, and I have an image file. It’s partially corrupted, but I managed to extract a lot of data. Is the decryption key perhaps located somewhere among the data from the image file? Can anyone help me? Is there any way I can restore my system from this VMWARE image?

Please help, my home is down.

Thank you in advance for any replies.

Did you read this page?

When you can start home assistant you might get it back.
If you can not start home assistant it might be available in the database.
I mean of you can retrieve it via home assistant it must be available somewhere. I assume it’s in some table, but did not check the code.

Hi.

The problem is resolved. I copied all the file and directory (which I recovered) from the disk image file. HA started, and I was able to copy the encryption key to the backup.

And now you need to put your key into a password manager and your backup somewhere external, cloud or Nas.
