Making a FlexiSpot E7 Pro smart with ESPHome and Home Assistant

I just replaced my old standing desk with a FlexiSpot E7 Pro with one big question in mind.

Can I get this thing into Home Assistant?

I ended up testing a new FlexiSpot version of the open-source DeskUp project from SmartHomeGuys. They did the hard work on the integration and I had the privilege of testing it on my E7 Pro.

The FlexiSpot uses RJ45 and a different protocol than their existing version, but the hardware for my prototype ended up being surprisingly simple. An ESP32, a short Ethernet cable, a few WAGO connectors and some Dupont wires.

No soldering. No custom PCB. The desk even powers the ESP32 itself.

Once it was running ESPHome, I had the desk in Home Assistant with height, movement and idle information along with controls for the desk itself.

And of course, getting it into Home Assistant meant I had to automate it.

My coffee routine now checks whether I’m sitting or standing and changes the desk position when my coffee is ready.

Completely necessary? No. :slightly_smiling_face:

But it has actually gotten me standing more.

I wrote up the full project, including the desk, the ESP32 prototype, the Home Assistant controls and what I ended up doing with the automation.

Five Years, Five Hours Standing. Then I Got a FlexiSpot and Made It Smart.

I’m curious what other people are doing with standing desks in Home Assistant. Once HA knows the actual desk position, there are a lot of interesting directions you can take it.
