Matter is supposed be local first, HA Matter Server beta appears to be internet first

After waking up to a complete loss of internet this morning, I frantically restarted some equipment, including my HA Green. With unplanned internet outage ongoing, I later found that my Matter devices, including lights, were not working, while my Hue devices, also including lights, continued to work.

I have the Matter beta enabled, and it appears the Matter Server add-on tries to download and install the latest beta on restart, but stalls when there is no internet.

I’m not sure whether this is expected behavior or whether I have something configured incorrectly. If this is how it works, I’ll report it as a potential oversight, since it seems reasonable for it to fall back to the currently installed version while offline so Matter devices can continue working locally.

Can anyone share their thoughts or experience with this?

Local first means local control first, not necessarily that you don't need internet access

The server tries to download certificates for matter devices, afaik. I agree that not having internet shouldn't prevent startup, though, so that would be a bug to be reported at Issues · matter-js/matterjs-server · GitHub

The whole point of beta is to dig out those kind of issue, so thanks for that.

Thank you for the info, sincerely interesting for me. Reported (my first bug report - I hope I did it correctly :slightly_smiling_face:).
