Does anyone know of a data logger or device that would enable me to monitor/measure the electricity usage for my rugby clubhouse and then link it to H.A.? I am based in the U.K.
I use one of these
Thank you, Neil. It’s very much appreciated. I’ll get one ordered.
As a little aside, if you get the opportunity, I’d be interested in any results you have and how you measure them. We are doing a little experiment and I’d be pleased to keep you posted of our progress.
Hi,
Bear in mind that if you have kit like older lighting towers, the “real” and “apparent” power measured are likely to be different - the phase angle.
For consumers, this is difference is ignored but for commercial polyphase metering, the power factor or phase angle may be included.
Yes, this is complicated, but a friend worked for the electricity distribution industry and found the reason match lights flickered was they had large inductors in them which were causing many problems. He had to disconnect the whole site to protect the local network - but generators arrived just in time for a match. Yes, that bad!
Clamp meters can measure the current, but also need to connect to phase to also check the phase angle (often just a single phase power supply).
The UK Shelly store is good, but you likely need larger clamps and the three phase version.
My experience with a smaller sports club is look at the “vampire load” or what is on when everything is off.
As an example, the savings found from replacing fluorescent emergency lights with LED fittings paid for new kit in about 2 years - and the LEDs don’t need replacement tubes. The old PSUs and drivers caused a significant background 7x24 current draw (e.g. D cell backup NiMH batteries down to AA Lion).
We also replaced an old CCTV recorder - it was donated, but when measured, was basically a space heater with camera!
Bar fridges and beer coolers are another area to look at - time switches may be an option, but this depends on how often the bar is open (may not be worth turning off, but replacing entirely).
If this helps, this post!
Thank you, James. Another very interesting suggestion and again much appreciated.
I’ll act on the lights, coolers and fridges as you advise. They will be one of our fist acts. I’ll look on the Shelley store as suggested. I’ve already ordered the Shelley EM as advised by Neil Brownlee.
I’ll pass on the advice about the "real and “apparent” power to the electrical men in the Club. We also have large floodlights, too, and will report your experience.
Do come forward with suggestions and experience. It all helps.
