Meross Smart Presence Sensor (16897) – Occupancy stuck on ‘occupied’ via Matter”

Title: Meross Smart Presence Sensor (16897) – Matter integration issue with occupancy state

Content: Hello everyone,

I am using the Meross Smart Presence Sensor (model 16897) with Home Assistant via Matter.

  • Firmware: 9.3.4
  • Hardware: 9.0
  • Integration: Matter (Raspberry Pi as controller, connected via FRITZ!Box router)

The sensor correctly reports the illuminance value (sensor.illuminance) in Home Assistant. However, the occupancy entity (binary_sensor.occupancy) seems to be stuck:

  • It always stays on “occupied” even when the room is empty.
  • It does not reset to “clear” after leaving the room.

I have already tested removing the device from Alexa and re‑adding it, but the issue persists.

Question:

  • Is this a known limitation of the current Matter implementation for Meross sensors?
  • Are there any workarounds (e.g. automations in Home Assistant to reset the state, or firmware updates planned)?

Issue: Occupancy entity (binary_sensor.occupancy) stuck on “occupied”

Thanks in advance for any advice or shared experiences!

I started to see the same thing on one of my sensors today as well. The other sensor, also connected via Matter seems to be working fine for now. I tried unplugging it for like 10 min. HA reported Unknown in the detection state. then I plugged it back in and it went back to Detected state and is never coming out of it. Anyone else knows anything about this? Thanks.

Created an account just to say that I had this same issue. I skipped the Meross app once I received them at first, but I begrudgingly succumbed, downloaded the app, made an account, and connected my sensor. Was then able to calibrate and adjust the sensitivity and such. It’s only been a few days but so far it’s been a night and day difference in performance. Something to try if you haven’t already.
