Micro Modules

Hi

I have searched but nothing really answers my question. I use Legrand lighting and Ring Alarm in my home and manage them through dedicated apps and Home Assistant. I am trying to move everything to Home Assistant to make life easier for others in the household.

I have remote electric gates (35m from house) which can access wifi. The Ring doorbell accesses the wifi and works well. The gate control is 24V and I have added a Legrand Plexo push button switch to control the gate manually as well.

I want to convert the switch to a connected version and duplicate it in the house. There is a connected Legrand Plexo product but it is expensive and I am not sure it will operate at 24V.

When I spoke to the gate openers manufacturer (NICE) they suggested adding a module to the control box to connect over Zigbee, ZWave or WiFi (2.4 GHz) but the market is inundated with offering that are not technically very clear. Names such as Sonoff, Tuya and Smart Life abound. It is also not clear if they will connect to my Legrand gateway or if another gateway is required. In short, I am lost!

Is there a list maintained of compatible modules that work with HA and also a link that clearly explains the differences and advantages of the three connective types, Zigbee, ZWave and WiFi?

TIA,

Geoff

Easiest way would be to connect to your push button, Do you have mains available there? If not, you need to install it to the gate. In both cases I recommend Shelly 1 (gen4).

Hi thanks for the response,

The push button is on a 24V circuit but I do have a 220V supply I could access from the box.

Do all these modules require 220V? If so, it seems easier to use an independent module that can be installed directly in the control box of the gate motors.

I will look into the shelly 1, thanks.

While button is on 24V circuit, it doesn’t have 24V to power Shelly.
If that button is located in your house, it would likely be easier to place Shelly there (for wireless).

Shelly 1 can be powered from 220VAC or from 12VDC or 24-48VDC.
So if your gate power supply is 24VDC, you have two options for power.

Thanks again. I have ordered one. Arrives next week so I will try to fit it and report back here either success or problems.

Is Sonoff an alternative to Shelly that is worth looking at (for other items I am trying to automate)?

Kind of. Maybe for zigbee, I wouldn’t pick Sonoff for wifi. They are not local (out of the box).

you can change this to reolink or dahua doorbell and use 2 way function and be completly within HA

I always felt ring connection (notifications) were slow so I missed people ringing bell at gate. I dont use 2 way but I do have notification to my phone with option within notification to open gate or show camera on TVs.

what is gate opener model?

I would use esp relay device. This will allow relay control of gate open / close and stop if desired. More importantly you can add sensor for gate state open/close. other sensor such as motion etc may be added.

depending on opener model it may be directly compatible with ratgdo.

It is also possible to use camera to check gate state (open/close).
I would prefer physical sensor however.

tmjpugh, thanks for the input.

Too heavily invested in Ring which works fine for me, response time, camera video and communications. There is also a Yale lock that works over HA for the side gate so I do not want to fiddle with too many changes. I have 6 camera that survey the house and grounds so it would not be an easy change to make.

NICE motorised arms. I use NICE tele-commands with the gates and I need to check if there is an integration for NICE. However, the system works well and all I am trying to do is add a connected push button so that I can manage it from the house. The easiest solution would be Legrand but it does not work at 24V. Hence now turning to try the Shelly product.
