Microphone for listening when away? Not Voice Assistant

With cameras set up in our home, we can monitor the place while we are away. And while they have audio capability, the bandwidth consumed by the video and audio makes the connection very poor and laggy - when it works at all.

So I’m looking for a microphone that is supported by home assistant in which we can listen in for sounds when we are not at home.

I found this topic from 6 years ago, but its not real-time and not an actual device integration.

Googling just brings up Microphones for use with Voice Assistant. That’s not what I’m looking for. Ideally, it would be like clicking on a control in the Dashboard to listen.

Ideas?

I believe there are Zigbee devices designed to listen for fire alarms - something along those lines might work - perhaps adjust your Google search a bit?

Edit: Maybe not… This one seems to be tuned to listen for alarms only.

Are you listening for audio or just alarms?

Pretty sure you can configure go2rtc for audio only from camera using ffmpeg. Try asking @ go2rtc github
