Migrate to new OTBR without re-pairing all devices

I have a ZBT-1 with a number of devices paired and working well, but my server it’s attached to is in the detached garage and has very low signal into the house. I have conduit between the house and garage with ethernet. I purchased a SLZB-06M and have it in the house via ethernet and would like to use it as the border router, but I don’t see a way to migrate the current network from the ZBT-1 to the SLZB-06M.

Is there a way to do this? Or do I have to factory reset every device and start from scratch?

Thank you!

Thread is not like Zigbee where devices are paired with a hub. It’s more analogous to WiFi where, once devices join a network, they can use any AP/router on that network.

In other words, you don’t need to migrate anything, you can just add a second border router to the mesh, then turn off the original border router and it should continue working normally.

Simply reconfigure your OTBR to use the SLZB-06M instead of the ZBT-1. The ZBT-1 or SLZB is more like a radio for sending/receiving packets to/from, and doesn’t know anything about Thread networking protocols, nor Matter.

I’ve tried this many times now, configuring OTBR to use the SLZB-06M ‘works’ in that the add on starts up, SLZB-06M reports an active thread network, but the existing matter devices never join the network.

On the IOS app, trying to add a matter device complains about missing thread credentials. Going to the debug screen and re-syncing the thread credentials doesn’t seem to change anything.

I’m really out of ideas on what else I can try.

How is it reporting this or to rephrase, what are you looking at that says it sees an active thread network?

You shouldn’t have to change Thread credentials. Did you delete the one on the iOS device?

The only idea I have at the moment is to set the OTBR logs to “Debug” level and capture logs with the ZBT-1, and then repeat with the SLZB-06M. You’ll at least have something to compare.
