Migrating to new hardware

I’m currently running hass.io on a RPI3b. I am planning on migrating this to a docker on an Intel Nuc. That part is done and settled, but I cannot seem to land on a desciscion in terms of the architecture. I’m currently considering a few options:

  1. Install ubuntu or ubuntu core, and install hassio, along with a number of other containers directly on the host OS
  2. Install proxmox, add ubuntu as a VM and do 1. there

I might have need for some virtualization in the future, but as it is i don’t have that need.

I use option 2 and am really happy with it.

One advantage is the easy backup with proxmox. You can simply make a snapshots of the VM, even automatically on a scheduled basis. Also if your NUC will die, you can just buy a new one, install proxmox, load the snapshot and you are back on track again.
