Thanks for the update. I’ve signed up on the crowdsupply site. Can’t wait! Thanks again for all you’ve been doing.
I’d be happy to test too. I’m using Raspberry Pi, Venus OS, Node-RED to integrate and control various RV components. Your upgrade kit would pair nicely with some virtual switches on the Victron touchscreen UI. They recently introduced a lot of features for building custom device controls in their UI. It’s getting more and more possible to use their system without needing a separate dashboard/screen.
Was looking for some replacement driver for my cheap BLDC ceiling fan. An attempt with generic power supply and BLDC driver wasn’t successful and made the fan jerky and super loud. Am i right ot assume that every BLCD motor has own properties that the driving hardware has to be adjusted towards? Just trying to understand what i’m doing. Are there any good driver boards that can be abjusted to my needs?
Hmm… yes, the quietest and most efficient methods for driving BLDC motors (such as field oriented control) need to be tuned for the motor’s electrical and physical properties.
Fans are an interesting case too because they operate at relatively low speeds so you need a driver that can handle that.
Before designing Minuet, I tried playing with a VESC board I had from an earlier project. It’s generally intended for electric skateboards with automatic tuning and lots of settings so it’s useful for playing with BLDC motors of various sizes. Unfortunately it struggled to operate smoothly at low speeds.
I suppose you could try using a MCF8316D dev board (same chip as Minuet) and use the TI Motor Studio program to do the tuning. It takes a bit of effort but works well.
Thanks i will get one of those. I did look at ODrive but sounds like i might run into the same low rpm issues.
Or could i use your board with adjustment in the programming for my fan? From what i understand my fan is somewhere in the 30 Watts. 12V power supply is no problem.
EDIT: found that dev board on eBay, will give it a try.
@jeffbrown Any update on this? With summer just around the corner, it would be amazing to have a brushless motor our Maxxfans and finally get rid of the noise! Will there be a possibility to order soon?
If I see correctly you are from the US, will you provide shipping to EU countries? Please say yes ![]()
Btw. I am sure tons of shops will be interested to sell your product if they find out about it. You should contact Camping Wagner and Fritz Berger.
Crowdsupply (which is a division of Mouser) does ship to the EU, though unlike the US it's not free.
I might be able to help with shipping within the EU.
I’m based in Germany and could set up a small warehouse for this purpose.
If Jeff could provide me with all the individual parts, I could then pack them together as a parcel and send them off.
Can't wait, my fan has been squealing away and I know my recent cleaning will only last a month or two!
One of mine appears to have died - starting randomly opening and closing the hood.
Hi,
Any news obout this projekt or is it dead?
Minuet is still very much alive. I’m on vacation at the moment. When I return, I will bring up the Minuet v4 boards and continue to work towards launching the kits.
Hello @jeffbrown looking forward. I'm not on the bay area but if anything I can help with, currently in Hood River, OR area.
Thanks for your interest! Coincidentally, I am camping at Hood Park tonight at the terminus of the Hood River.
Great, since you’re in the area. There is a van show here in HoodRiver this weekend. Some good stuff and YouTube personalities are going.
Just learned of this project! Very interested in getting on board for V4. If there’s anything needed to help usher this along happy to help.
