Mobile MA – an unofficial native iOS, CarPlay, Watch and TV client for your Music Assistant players

I know a lot of HA users run Music Assistant — for most it sits right next to Home Assistant as an add-on, and the players then show up as media_player entities in HA. That’s exactly where something kept bothering me: to actually control it you had the web UI or a Lovelace card. On an iPhone both are awkward, and in the car or on a watch they don’t exist at all.

So I built Mobile MA, an unofficial native SwiftUI client for Music Assistant — iPhone, iPad, Mac, CarPlay, Apple Watch and Apple TV.

Up front, so it’s clear: this is an independent project, not affiliated with Home Assistant or the Music Assistant project. It’s free to download; unlocking everything is a one-time purchase, not a subscription.

What it does for an HA setup:

  • Players and groups — group any speakers into a zone, save combinations you use often as a scene, recall them with one tap
  • Remote access without VPN or port forwarding — a direct, encrypted WebRTC connection to your own server. If you reach HA from outside via Nabu Casa or a reverse proxy, you don’t need to open anything extra for MA
  • CarPlay with the full library and voice search, working even before you’ve opened the app on your phone
  • Apple Watch and Apple TV as standalone apps
  • Multiple servers as named connection profiles, e.g. test and production

It talks only to the server you configure. No intermediary service, no account, no analytics or advertising SDKs; credentials live in the iOS Keychain.

Requirements: a running Music Assistant server, iOS/iPadOS 18.6 or later, tvOS 17 or later.

Feedback welcome — particularly on how it holds up in larger setups with a lot of players. I would really love to hear from you!

I use two official MA instances: one on my mobile phone and another installed on a mini PC with a touchscreen, which is connected to an amplifier and used solely as an MA player. I also have the MA server installed separately—outside of Home Assistant—so any restarts following updates don’t interrupt music playback.
