Modern Forms fan intermittently unavailable – HTTP/API on port 80 stops responding

I’m seeing intermittent availability problems with a Modern Forms ceiling fan in Home Assistant.

Home Assistant is running the built-in modern_forms integration and communicates locally with the fan at 10.0.0.53.

The fan/light entities periodically become unavailable. I enabled debug logging for:

The logs now show repeated failures such as:

Timeout occurred while connecting to Modern Forms device at 10.0.0.53

and, in some cases:

OSError: [Errno 113] Connect call failed ('10.0.0.53', 80)

aiohttp.client_exceptions.ClientConnectorError:
Cannot connect to host 10.0.0.53:80

The failures are intermittent. For example, one sequence looked like this:

14:26:02  success, 9.581 sec
14:26:27  success, 9.738 sec
14:26:51  success, 8.701 sec
14:27:15  success, 8.824 sec
14:27:39  failure
14:27:56  recovered, 1.829 sec

Normally, successful polls are much faster, often around 0.2–0.4 seconds.

There were multiple failures during the day, including timeout errors and direct failures to connect to TCP port 80. In most cases the integration recovered on a subsequent polling cycle without restarting Home Assistant.

I also ran a continuous ping test to the fan and saw:

Packets: Sent = 1046, Received = 1046, Lost = 0
0% packet loss

So the device remained reachable at the IP layer during that test, which makes me suspect the embedded HTTP/API service is intermittently becoming slow or unavailable rather than the fan completely dropping off Wi-Fi.

I have also hardened my HA automations so that they skip the Modern Forms light entity when it is unavailable or unknown. Since doing that, I no longer see service-call warnings caused by the unavailable entity, but the underlying Modern Forms API failures remain.

Has anyone else seen this behavior with Modern Forms fans?

In particular, I’m interested in whether this is known to be caused by:

  • the fan’s embedded HTTP server becoming overloaded,
  • the integration polling too frequently,
  • a Modern Forms firmware issue,
  • or something specific to the aiomodernforms library.

I can provide full debug logs if useful.
