Move from pi4 to pi5 and from zigbee to zigbee2mqtt

Ever since I have moved from a pi4 to pi5 and from zigbee to zigbee2mqtt I’m having issues with scenes and devices. No zigbee device seems to be working reliable anymore. I guess I must be doing something wrong but I can’t figure out what is going on.

Devices keep being disabled and the lights refuse to work at all. I have removed them and joined them back again. When a simple automation is to run to turn the lights on at a specific time the message is sent but the lights refuse to do anything. Even when I toggle the lights from withing zigbee2mqtt noting happens. When I try to select the mqtt variants it gives the same result. I can select the mqtt light but I can’t toggle anything.
Any suggestions are welcome…

I can’t provide any insight into the actual problem you are facing.

However one question: When you say Scenes are you referring to Zigbee Scenes ** or HA Scenes?

** - I am not sure if that is an actually Zigbee concept or just what Zigbee2MQTT calls them.

Sounds like two separate problems stacked on top of each other:

  1. Zigbee2MQTT itself can’t reach the devices.
If toggling a light inside the Z2M frontend does nothing, Home Assistant isn’t the issue yet – the radio link is. Two classics after a Pi 5 move: the stick sits directly in a USB 3 port (USB 3 noise sits right on 2.4 GHz and kills Zigbee range – put it on a USB 2.0 extension cable, 50 cm or so), and ZHA still holding on to the same stick. Make sure the ZHA integration is deleted, not just disabled, before Z2M owns the coordinator. The Z2M log usually tells you which one it is (look for “MAC channel access failure” / “NO_ROUTE” errors vs. adapter connection errors).

  2. Scenes and automations still point to the old ZHA entities.
Re-joining devices in Z2M creates new MQTT entities with new IDs. Your old scenes keep referencing the dead ZHA ones, which is why they “send” but nothing happens. Once Z2M can switch the lights reliably, re-pick the entities in each scene/automation.

I wrote up the Z2M setup including the extension-cable and ZHA-vs-Z2M bits here, maybe the troubleshooting table helps: https://raspberry.tips/en/raspberrypi-tutorials/zigbee2mqtt-setup-home-assistant

Which coordinator are you using, and is it on a cable?

I have the zigbee stick connected with a cable as I knew about this issue.
It’s your second comment you made that got me to work things out. I was indeed still using the old variables as I was (stupidly) assuming they would all be the same. I was wrong. I changed all to the the new mqtt variants and all is working again. I guess I survived moving to zigbee2mqtt now. I should have looked at a number of things up front. I guess hindsight is 20-20.
Thanks again!
