Since the update in december 2016 the installation moved from /home/hass/.homeassistant to /home/homeassistant/.homeassistant.
I installed HASS prior to december 2016, so I was wondering if I could move my installation to the new path? If yes, what would be the best way to move the installation.

Sadle, I did not. But I must admit that I did not have to time to try and move the installation to see if it keeps working.
maybe do a new installation, and then move the configuration.yaml and the custom_components only?

It wasn’t just the new path. Hass is basically the username. What you’ll need to do is create a new HomeAssistant user, copy the files over to the new path, then Recreate the auto start script with the new user and new path. Then you can remove the hass user and old path.
