I use an old chromebook (Lenovo 500e, 32GB not upgradable and getting full) for HAOS. I’d like to store my on-device backups (I also back up to cloud) on a microsd card instead of on internal storage. I’ve formatted it as ext4, plugged it in and restarted. What next please?
Also, if this is a stupid idea, please gently say so. I have no spare USB sockets for an SSD and I understand USB hubs are to be avoided.

I would not trust a microsd for backup. I’d certainly avoid an UNPOWERED hub and I wouldn’t put the SSD anywhere near your zigbee or ZWave dongles because interference is a thing. But there’s recommendations all over this forum that you SHOULD USE a powered USB hub if you’re adding an SSD via USB because on many popular systems (cough pi cough) the USB rail can’t handle the power draw required for things like SSD because it’s hard limited to USB max current
