Moving to new hardware

Hi,

I’d like to ask for guidance on a point regarding a move to new hardware I will need to make now I’ve had notice of the deprecation of my current hub.

My current hub as Zigbee and Zwave built in but my planned new h/w will be x86 with Zigbee (Sonoff)& Zwave (Aeotec) dongles.

I know I can restore my current configuration from backup but because it will be different Zigbee & Zwave hardware am I right in saying I will have to reset each device and add to new system as surely the controller h/w will be different. Or is there a shortcut I can take to avoid having to reset about 40 sensors, plugs etc

As anyone done this at any point? If so what was your experience?

Many thanks

Andy

I am not sure about Z-Wave, but resetting all your ZigBee devices may not be necessary.

Hello @AndyN,
Hi Andy, you’re right—migrating to new Zigbee and Z-Wave hardware typically requires re-pairing devices, as controller-specific identifiers differ. However, for Z-Wave, if you can transfer the NVM (non-volatile memory) from your old controller to the new Aeotec stick, you might avoid resetting devices. Zigbee usually requires re-pairing, but restoring the same network key and using the same channel can help the hub recognize devices faster. It’s tedious, but some users have streamlined it with careful backups and matching configurations. Good luck with the transition! krogerfeedback com

That is not necessarily true. It depends on the adapter type and the chip in each coordinator.

This is a good reference

Thanks James I thought so but Ive been sent a couple of articles that may help. Might be an idea time for a clean install and fresh start with HAOS . Thank you

Thank you for taking the time to sent the articles I’ll have a read…

I’ve been there. Resetting 40+ ZigBee devices is not a simple task, so it may be worth a quick look :eyes:

Yeh certainly will. I don’t fancy that task again as I had to do that when I moved from SmartThings a couple of years ago.

If I can offer one piece of advice, it would be this. Unless you already bought the dongles, you might want to consider moving to a network/POE coordinator for zigbee rather than a USB one.
You’ll avoid having to deal with USB interference, device IDs and passthrough (if you’re running on a VM), while at the same time be able to place your coordinator in a more central place if you have ethernet available.

I’m fairly sure network coordinators have started to appear for Zwave too recently, but not up to date on them since I don’t use Zwave.

I see your point. But if you don’t already have POE, a spare port and a cable already routed to the desired coordinator location, a dongle with a 1- or 2-meter USB cable is a whole log easier. There’s also the issue of yet another hardware device and communication stack between HA and the edge devices.

Poe is not essential. I run mine on ethernet+ usb power.

In my case, I had around 3 always on usb ports lying unused, which proved handy as a power source. If I hadn’t, any ancient phone charger would have done the job at the cost of a spare socket :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you for the feedback and especially the suggestion to consider a Zigbee network coordinator. I’ve found one on Amazon I can connect via Ethernet and power via usb so ideal as it uses the later Zigbee chipset.

I’ve built the new x86 box with HAOS so once the new Zigbee & Zwave h/w arrive I’ll start the setup and building of the a new network.

Might take a while no doubt …

Thanks again

Andy
