Music Assistant Rookie questions

Hey all,

I am new to music assistant and wanted to get some questions answered now that I have installed and began setup.

I was wondering if music assistant can work as a receiver for airplay, then cast out to non airplay devices? If so, how do we set this up?

Ex. Looking to have a player come up on my iPhone, let’s call it MAAirplay. Then that player could be attached to another device like an old android phone or tablet connected to some speakers. (+1 if we can multi zone )

Is this possible? I have been reading through the documentation but there are so many features I get lost in it.

Any clarification would be great.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Not that I am aware of.

MA is similar to something like plex/emby/slimserver/etc, for audio.

It consolidates multiple sources of music (providers) so that it can be distributed out to the players/clients.

Airplay is a supported client, but there doesn’t appear to be any airplay source provider, so you cannot send to MA via airplay, but you can send out to airplay.

@ AirPlay - Music Assistant has more info

Makes sense when you put it like that!

Thanks for the response

But there are ongoing discussions about sendspin providing an “audio in” type connection but it will be some time yet yet as they have more important stuff to sort first. Pop over to the MA discord channel and follow stuff there.

Esp32 connected to speakers works great

Sendspin reference hardware is the HAVPE but seems any esp32 with psram will be ok. HAVPE is definitely the easiest now

There is sendspin Linux client so raspberry pi is likely easiest solution since it has audio out and Linux is a bit more stable platform than esphome(active development and need to specify detailed config for device )

MA’s web ui runs as webapp on phone so very smooth.

Supports all music providers (Apple Music, Spotify, etc) so it basically pulls them all into a single interface. I have all my Apple Music playlist in MA and just send that on speaker or search for album and play. Also supports local files.
