Just installed Music Assistant, and ran into a problem.
My set-up:
I have several Sonos speakers (on S2 operating system, the new one) around the house, which all work fine using the Sonos app.
I also have a simple NAS in the network, which also works fine.
All Sonos speakers and the NAS are part of a separate VLAN: vlan_sonos.
The Raspberry Pi running Home Assistant is on VLAN vlan_iot.
In the firewall rules of my router I made sure that traffic between Home Assistant and the vlan_sonos is allowed.
I was able to add all Sonos speakers to Music Assistant and the NAS on vlan_sonos is visible in Music Assistant as well. I can see the album art in Music Assistant.
What i can:
I can play music from the NAS in Music Assistant in the browser, proving that the NAS is accessible.
When I use the Sonos app on phone, I can select the exact same song and it plays, so the speaker can see the NAS.
I am able to control any Sonos speaker from a card on a dashboard in Home Assistant. So there’s clearly a link between all three items: Home assistant & speaker & NAS
What I can’t:
From Music Assistant I can’t play music from the NAS on any Sonos speaker. It every time timed out. This is one of the errors:
Am I doing something wrong?
Have i forgotten to set-up something?
I couldn’t find any suggestion online to try to troubleshoot this issue.
I have applied all available updates of Home Assistant and Music Assistant.
Hope someone has the hint that makes it work for me.
Likely a routing problem / firewall issue between MA / NAS / Sonos, Temporarily, try adding some allow all rules to the VLAN firewall to see if it can work. Next step would be packet logging to see if MA is talking to the speaker and the NAS.
Thank you for your time and suggestion to do some packet logging. I’ll definitely do that.
I’m interested to know why you think it could be firewall related.
Since I can see the album art in MA, communication is possible between the NAS and MA.
Since I was able to add all players to MA, and can select them, that link is okay.
Since I can use the Sonos app to play music from the NAS on any speaker, that link is okay too.
I don’t see what may be the issue from a etwork perspective. But, to be fair, I’m not a network expert, so I may overlook some things.
I’m genuinely interested in you opinion.
No matter what I select in MA (share with my music library or a radio station) nothing gets played.
But, when I first select in the Sonos app on my phone a playlist, or an album, in MA I can literally see what is playing (the album art), the waveform progress bar is correct and it shows how far in the song it is, I can use the previous and next arrow buttons, I can change the volume, I can do whatever I want, as long as I do not select an other source (radio or other song).
So clearly MA can see what is happening, and it can control the speakers, but telling the speakers to listen to something new, no way, that’s too difficult.
I hope a maintainer of Music Assistant reads this cause I really like their implementation. I would like to integrate this into my dashboard in the kitchen, since the Sonos app itself is horrible.
Or is there an other forum where I can raise the problem I’m having?
I could only find a port number for streams (Settings → Streams → TCP Port): 8097. In the firewall rules I have enabled all ports, not filtering on port numbers.
Where should I look for other port settings, like music from a shared drive?
I have no knowledge on the inner workings of Music Assistant (MA), but shouldn’t it just tell the speaker to get the music form <IP_ADDRESS>/<SHARED_FOLDER>/music/artist/album/xyz.mp3? Or does all music go from share to MA to speaker? (Now that I’m writing this, it’s likely to be this way, otherwise the waveform progress bar can’t be generated and the progress can’t be tracked…).
