We’ve got our sights set on adding even more plugins like this down the line (AirPlay, anyone?)
Yes please!!! This would simplify my setup dramatically if we could use MA to control HomePod speakers without cutting them off from all other controls (inc physical, not just Siri). Or at least that was the case last time I tried to control an Airplay speaker with Music Assistant. Would this issue be addressed with that hinted support?
I’ll try this out and find out for myself, but I’m curious about your point of view as well: how close is this to being a replacement for Roon?
Specifically looking at: having natively supported “remote” speakers that I can install some code on to be a speaker (I have little Linux boxes or RPis all over the house attached to DACs, that I use as endpoints for Roon already).
I think that’s it really. Looks like a lot of the other features are getting very close.
Running 2.4. on HA 2025.3.1 and I still seem to have the same problem I’ve seen reported in the forum here and elsewhere. The Now Playing and queue don’t update from the first song played, unless I use FF before the first song ends.
Otherwise the display stays on the first song and nothing in the queue moves from the Queue to Played lists. This happens with both my Sonos and Squeezebox devices.
I’m relatively new to MA and find it both very promising, and extremely frustrating. I hope it’s just something simple I’m doing wrong since it is unusable for me with this issue.
Recommend you post such questions on under Music Assistant ”discussions” on GitHub which thier project’s dedicated community forum (instead of this thread which is only an announcement post).
You do however need to understand that Music Assistant is an integration platform/framework, so Music Assistant itself will not replace music streaming services such as Roon, Spotify or Apple Music, as instead it is designed to help you integrate different echosystems/platforms that might not normally work together, and it does so via plugins for ”Music Providers” (i.e. sources) and ”Player Providers” (i.e. endpoints) which each add the magic translation/conversion component which makes it work with Music Assistant.
Anyway, if you already have a Raspberry Pi connected to each set of speaker then you have loads of flexibility to use different media player solutions. You are today way more limited if you only have ESP32 devices to each set of speakers, but based on previous development efforts the project has shown guge progress and more media player options look to possibly get added or improved in the future for both ESP32 and Raspberry Pi type computers. For what actually works today you want to check out their ”Player Providers” page:
I just set up my very first Home Assistant, opted for the Green box to get to grips with the basics, and accidentally stumbled on this… WOW, I am seriously impressed, love your work!!
I think you should start by joining the MA discord server or the discussion pages on Github and share your experience. What is not working, what is missing etc.
We intend to make Snapcast a first class citizen of the ecosystem but maybe some of your requirements are out of scope for now.
Music Assistant is really growing and its really nice to see!
I’m missing a local search function per library though. Sometimes I only want to search my local library for specific tracks and I dont want it to get shuffled with all other media sources, primarily spotify. As it is now it makes it a bit hard to find specific songs.
The ability to sort by genre, I still cant find it?
Also the possibility to play music directly from the companion app and from the web browser would make it a final product for me personally
Two major features are missing for Music Assistant to be able to replace frontend media players:
Ability to play music directly from the Home Assistant Companion apps for iOS + Android
Ability to have separate different end-users/accounts playback status and playlists.
Would love to have a dedicated Music Assistant Companion app for iOS and Android, but the second feature request above is really a showstopper to be able to use audiobooks in a family.
Hopefully someday we can use Home Assistant Companion app on our own smart phones and tablets using different accounts to not only play music but also track playback per user without having to share playback status and playlists with others in our family that are also using the same Music Assistant Server.
Otherwise the user experiecne will be the whole family using Spotify on different devices but sharing a single Spotify account so you see what everyone else is playing and there is no way to track playback if you leave and someone else takes over the session and plays something else.
