Which triggers the question how they got their hands on the email addresses of those people in the first place 
It has always been easy to probe email servers for addresses and harvest them. It has been happening since the early 2000s. Then they can strip off the domain and arrive at accounts ids and start working on passwords. That is while long hard passwords came about and now 2FA is pushed.
True. One of the many possible ways to get their hands on some of the users email addresses.
We have the suspicion of it being connected to reacting to a post on Linkedin, if I remember correctly.
