Nest Hello Doorbell Snapshots

Hi,

I’ve seen many posts about people trying to get their Nest Hello Doorbell to be able to take a snapshot when certain events are triggered (ie - person detected). The doorbell will take a snapshot, but it is just that black image with a white “splodge” on the right hand side about 2/3 of the way up the image.

Did anyone every find a resolution for this? In my case the Nest Hello camera is streaming fine using a picture card entity set to “live” camera view to stream the live footage. But the image taken using the “camera.snapshot” action always returns the black image I mention above.

Annoyingly I think this used to work as I have a crap load of images in the “/config/nest/event_media/MYCAMERADEVICEID/” folder but those images seems to have stopped appearing on 26 December 2024. (Which may be when I migrated the Nest doorbell from the Nest app to the Google Home app - can’t remember as likely hungover from Christmas day).

As always any advice/pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Sorry - forgot to add. This image:

Just posting here to say I have the same issue. Can only see the black image with white glow on exactly the same spot as yours, when I try to make a snapshot from my Nest Battery Doorbell. Live view works fine.

I think camera.snapshot doesn’t work since the stream isn’t loaded. I use the snapshot that are created when someone press the doorbell in the nest event_media folder.
See that you have snapshot and the desired events switched on at https://nestservices.google.com/partnerconnections

Hi Richard,

Is that URL correct: nestservices.google.com ? I get an error 404 page not found message when I try and visit that page.

Hi Richard,

Sorry - just thought of another question. Do you have the Nest doorbell linked to your Google Home app, or the original Nest app?

I have it connected to the Google Home app yes.
Following the Google Nest - Home Assistant
I updated my previous link with the one from the integration page, see if it works.

Thanks for updating the link. All the available options are ticked. I’ll read through the “Google Nest - Home Assistant” link again and see if there is something I missed.

Hey Richard, sorry another question. Did you “migrate” your Nest Doorbell to the Google Home app? And is your Nest Doorbell still accessible using the Nest app?

Yes I have migrated my Nest Account to a Google Account and it’s working in both apps.
Do you get any pictures in your nest folder?
Can you trigger automations with “Device Triggers”?

I have migrated my Nest account to a Google account, and the camera appears in Google Home but no longer appears in the Nest app. I don’t have any pictures in the Nest folder in Home Assistant, and I can trigger automations with “Device Triggers”.

@Ruuddie - out of curiosity, have you migrated your Nest doorbell to the Google Home app? And if you have, is the Nest doorbell still visible in the Nest app?

Same issue here - I migrated from Nest to Google Home last year and have all of the permissions allowed

After digging a bit more, I think this is an issue on Google’s end. See Google Issue Tracker and +1 if appropriate.

I noticed in the Google Home app there was the option to transfer the Nest doorbell back to the Nest app. Out of curiosity I might give that a try and see if it resolves the issue. However I’m a bit reluctant to try that it case it screws things up and I am unable to use the doorbell in either app.
