New Backup strategy is taking one step forward, two steps back

  • “Automatic backup could not be created”
My “automatic” backup failed last night. Probably because one can NOT schedule the automatic backup at your own preference, but for some mysterious reason it must be 4:45 for everyone on the planet. Well, that happens to be the time, once a month, my router restarts. No access to the remote backup location.

  • You get the “repair” message under “settings” … shouldn’t that be a “notification”

  • Why is there no way to “repair now” , but only a message that it will be attempted again at the next schedule time?

  • So I go to “show all backups” and try to create a manual backup.

    • backup now
    • Manual backup
    • Next
      I need to provide a name… ok
then for locations, I can either choose “ALL(2)” or “Custom”
But wait a minute… I only HAVE one backup location enabled in the backup settings. The button for “This system” is OFF
So, in order to get my saved preference (backing up to only my remote location) I must choose Custom??
  • So now I have a manually created backup on both my remote storage and on “this system”. I want to delete the on from this system.
click the three dots next to the backup in the list. click delete… there is NO choice which one to delete.

  • Why is there no option to create a backup right before installing an update. (Like there was a few weeks ago) Seems to me (and in my experience) the most likely time you ever want a backup, is right after something goes bad during an update.

Backups, because they are vital, should be easy to manage and not be a maze that needs navigating.

The developers are aware of the issues and are working on a fix to allow the changes you’ve laid out because others have brought them up as well. As for why the default is 4:45 am, it’s my understanding that Home Assistant does some database maintenance that should be done by that time, so they want the update to include those changes.

Ok, thank you for the info.
I tried to find similar comments, but didn’t do a deep dive.
You mean there is some database maintenance on the user’s local database that happens right before 4:45?

I love the whole idea of Home Assistant. But because they update so fast, it sometimes feels that it is done in a rush, and the manuals don’t always seem up to date.

For example, I spend hours during the last weekend to find an example of setting up a number helper that performs the inverse of a sensor (like seconds interval to Herz) There are number helpers, there are template helpers of the number type, but you have to assign an intermediate variable before you can use that.
The same thing with the statistics helpers. I cannot seem to find an explanation of what “sampling size” and “max age” , “percentile” etc do. Why can’t I find a statistics helper that samples a sensor every 30 seconds and averages the last 20 samples?
(I am not asking you to answer those, just saying how poorly documented things are)

Have a good weekend.
