Of course I was thrilled to see the compact header being added to core. About time! (but seriously, nice job, I’m thrilled).
Though I think there’s something wrong.
I’m on 0.117.2 now, and I still have the extra line of header. What’s worse, I have the “hamburger menu” appearing twice, both in the side bar and in the top line of the header (the line that should ideally just be gone now, see screenshots). They both do the same, expand/collapse side bar.
I have cleared cache.
’clear your cache in your browser.
EDIT: I Just noticed you said you did that. Not saying that I don’t believe you but… Verify it’s cleared. Stuff like this happens when you have browser cache left over.

But I’m also still using the deprecated CH.
If I remove the “compact_mode: true” setting (by changing it to false) I get exactly what you are seeing.
Are you still using CH in your config?
It looks like they made the font smaller in the header as well in 117.
Ahh, that’s probably it. I just uninstalled the deprecated repo, and now it looks fine. Thanks!
@petro My very approximate estimate says that 10-20% of all my issues have been solved by clearing cache, so now I religiously do that any time I see an issue. Even if it’s an issue I don’t think is related. Since you can just clear for one url, it’s not too bad, and it was getting embarrassing to get all those “clear your cache” replies to my issues
