New install on PI4 with error connecting to server

Hi
I have read forum topics about not connecting to ‘homeassistant.local’ but having dramas. I think it is because i am trying to: write the SD card, connect Ethernet cable DIRECTLY to laptop and booting it up.

It boots up (screen and keyboard on PI) but shows no IPV4 or 6 IP addresses.
When attempting to connect to url, it fails.

Don’t have a router handy just the PI and laptop. Is it possible to test it this way? I thought it could run local without router and internet?

First time setting home assistant up.

ED1t:
used nmcli to setup WiFi access. It showed wifi connection and ip address but still could not connect with “ip:8123”
Used RPI imager to rewrite SD card with HA. Awaiting a solution before booting it up again.

Setup needs the internet to get the setup files. Plus your pi will need a DHCP server to get an IP address from. You can’t just plug into a laptop to do this unless your laptop is running a DHCP server with an internet connection. There are other things as well but the 2 I listed are enough to stop it.

Jip, thought as much.
There could be a work around if one edit the config files of “network manager” after writing the image to SD card. So upon first boot-up it connects to wifi network… I have done this in the past but are not going to pursue that avenue.

I will just wait a few days until I am back home, then maybe try again. ? need internet for setup files but have to setup first so one can connect to internet?
I could be back in a few days with some more Questions
Thanks for the help

Just follow the guide step by step and you won’t go wrong. Skip a step and it wont work. Try not to use wifi, its not recommended. You don’t need the pi anywhere near your laptop to install.
