New User: How to edit configuration.yaml

I am a very New User. While trying to figure out how to make one of my devices work, I came across posting showing that I needed to edit configuration.yaml.
Then more searching to find that I needed the “File Editor” add-on. Then I found generally vague comments on problems getting it, the few that give info - were WAY out of date.

This is the current set of steps needed:

  1. Settings → Add-ons
If you don’t have any installed yet, the “Add-On Store” opens automatically. If you DO have some installed, you need to press the “Add-On Store” button at the lower right.

  2. Select the “File Editor” from the “Official Add-ons” group and install it.

  3. NOW, when you use “Settings → Add-ons”, the “File Editor” will be there. Click on it.

  4. A page of info ABOUT the “File Editor” is displayed. You will need to click on the “Start” link at the bottom of the first panel.

  5. Once it finishes starting, click on the “Open web UI” button to bring it up.

  6. Click on the folder icon at the top left, to select a file to edit. (ex: configuration.yaml.)

Hello CasaDelGato,

This adds a few points as well. Nice post though.

And possibly adding a bit about when you’re done; how to exit the File Editor (with and without saving the file). That’s not necessarily intuitive either.

The only problem with that article is that the screen shot doesn’t seem to match what I see on screen, and is definitely missing a few of the steps.

I admit to not having actually edited/saved anything, as I have no idea what I might need to do to solve my problem with a power meter device. (posted as How to get all parameters from a 2 channel power meter
