Newbie Says Hello!

I’m completely new to Home Assistant though I’ve been meaning to dive in for ages. I finally pulled the trigger and have just ordered a Home Assistant Green, so I’m in the very early stages of planning how I want everything to fit together once it arrives.

My main goal is to shift away from multiple apps to a single dashboard without making the setup overly complicated to start.

I’ll be starting with some basic integrations like Honeywell Evohome, a few smart plugs, ring cameras/doorbell etc and the automation/scenes will be real basic to turn lights (via switches) on at sunset, some off at 9pm controlling kids lights etc, others off later. I am guessing I can then look further into using Alexa motion + Time to turn switches on/off, but I’ll learng to walk before running.

I’ve got an old(ish) tablet (a Lenovo Tab M10 (3rd Gen)) which I plan to use as a “hub” display in the lounge, serving as the main HA dashboard. To help e (hopefully) get things right from the start, I’ve created a project in AI that will help me assign Area IDs, Entity IDs, Domains, groups etc all using a standard convention, along with defining scenes (includes/excludes) and then generating the necessary YAML in the required format. I know, maybe overkill, but I enjoy the coding challenge!

Anyway, thats me - thought I’d say Hi!

Good morning (us time here)

Please don’t do that - from your resident LLM expert.

If you are new (and this goes for all new folks)
AI. Particularly LLM - yes ALL Of THEM - are approximately 18 months behind current general knowledge because of training cycles. And HA is a fast moving project. And most examples of HA code on the internet are well. Less than accurate.

All that goes to load up bad training data.

So unless you have 100% builtt your own tool using coding capable llm trained ONLY from HA source code and told to forget everything it knows about Ansible. It will get this task very wrong in ways you won’t recognize. Because you don’t know what to look for yet.

I can spot a HA LLM hallucination in two seconds… Because I’m both a trained llm person and very well versed in HA. If you are not be advised it WILL hallucinate and, if you don’t know where it usually does badness and fix it. You will have a VERY bad time. Because it’ll look great. Well formed trash.

And the one place you don’t want trash is config.yaml your main configuration file.

…So your friendly neighborhood Spiderman urges you to not use the llm. Use your brain. Use the llm after the brain has learned the patterns correctly.
