A few months ago, I used to live in an apartment where wifi was provided by a few Huawei 7206 APs and the HACS integration worked really well to track my cellphone / wifes cellphone and know when we were at home.
We moved to a house and the networking infrastructure is new - based on TPLink Omada Switches and APs and the Omada Integration won´t provide device tracking.
So my idea was to use the nmap device tracker.
With the default options, it gets a handful of hosts (7 to 10 hosts) but my network has 80+ devices connected.
Just for comparison, I use a tool called wifi guard that scans the local network and it gets almost all 80+ hosts.
Hi , im not familiar with Nmap, but Device_Tracker is a build-in function in HA
Some Integrations provides device_trackers, however they might be “disabled”
In Settings/Devices-Services you click on entities (make sure you don’t have any filters on(in the left part of the site) search for device_tracker
Here are some details and features of the builtin Integrations/
Are your phones configured for constantly changing MAC addresses, or fixed ones? Most modern ones default to changing ones, supposedly for security purposes. Fixing them makes for easier tracking.
Do you have static IP addresses at your new location? Did you at the old? Do they match? The DHCP area in your router configuration is where you set these.
Are your phones ‘named’ so they are seen by your router and network with those names when they are connected?
Not sure how the tracker software actually tracks, by IP address, MAC address or some other mechanism. Whatever makes them unique is what you can do to narrow down your responses to filter for the phones only.
See the warning on the tracker documentation page about changed functionality in the heading known_devices.yaml. I quote:
“As of 0.94 known_devices.yaml is being phased out and no longer used by all trackers. Depending on the integration you use this section may no longer apply. This includes OwnTracks, GeoFency, GPSLogger, Locative and Huawei LTE.”
It’s either the integration (Router) pushing, or HA(requesting info from Devices/Integrations) , He shouldn’t need to use yaml, unless in “rare solutions/cases”
… and id did posted that url already
It’s not in particular a “Phone” issue he experience., and apparently, he’s not familiar with his Router’s/Integrations features, i doubt he have a need for nmap-integration( i could be wrong )
True, but if he was before, and it is still lurking away, it may be interfering with correct functionality. Best check and rule it out as a variable to worry about.
@IOT7712@boheme61 you guys rock, now I understand how it works and fortunately the TP-Link Omada integration does provide device tracking… it is simply disabled.
By looking into all entities associated with the integration, i was able to find my cellphone and my wifes. It was a matter of enabling the entities.
Been there my self, few years ago, noone “disabled” them ( And dissabled was easyer to find ), i guess it’s some kind of security reasons, HA or The integrations should provide an easier way, than one have to poke around
edit: type, a note " you have xx disabled trackers, want to enable them ? "
