Noob help setting up

Hi all,
I’m very new to HA and slowly working my way round it all.

I’m having some issues getting terminal started and working as I’m looking to run hacs and mushroom.
However it seams to be in an add on start up loop.

I have been looking through the forum and found advice to do a power cycle on my pi4, but any time I lose power, my HA reverts back to factory settings and i lose everythi g i have built and I have to run the backed up restore. (Praying I don’t lose anything or too much)

Am I missing something or is this just something that we live with running HA?
And has any one got any advice to help get terminal running?

First are you following the docs or some random YouTube guide from years ago?

Always refer to the docs, they will be the most up to date. YouTube is useful for guides and inspiration but the docs will always have the latest info and as we all know stuff changes often.

You should not lose any settings rebooting HA, if you are it will be far better to sort that issue before going any further. This issue needs more info.

I’m going between the 2 at the moment,
I’m a little stressed at the moment as through the day I did 5 backups through the day at key point to prevent any losses.

As I did a shut down and power cycle, ha re loaded to default as a fresh start.

I have tried restoring the latest backup, but its just coming back up with the initial setup.

I’m away from home at the moment so can’t do screen shots.

Is there something I’ve missed on set up to restore everything after a power loss?

How did you install HA ?

Should not happen,

Looks like we need to get back to basics.

As asked already, how was it installed?
Which install guide did you follow?
Are you using HAOS?
What hardware are you using?
How are you making and restoring the backups?

I’m running via ssd usb, and set up the pi to boot from that.
I used pi os image to install onto the ssd, then used sd card via pi imager to boot from usb.

I then removed the sd card as boot up would just give me a green screen,
( I have now been able to recover my last backup, but I’m worried about losing power again.)

I’ve got terminal running, but it’s not downloading the hacs.xyz, (will screen grab when I’m next at the terminal)

Please excuse the noobness.
All I used was raspberry pi imager to install the os onto ssd and again used imager to load up other boot onto sd so pi would boot from usb rather than sd,
I’m using a raspberry pi 4 model B 4gb,
256 ssd
And removed the sd card (green screen on boot up if I left it in)

Are you saying that the power just cut off, or did you reboot the pi? If the power is cutting out, are you using the official PI power adapter? You need a good power supply to run a pi4 with an ssd, at least 3amp or you will end up having random shutdowns due to power not being enough.

What you have done to install is all correct and should work. And it has downloaded the hacs files it just can’t find the directory to save it in. Sadly I can’t help with that but someone with more knowledge than me will no doubt be able to help.

Most issues seen with RPi’s are due to sd cards failing or poor power supplies. so eliminate those first. Sd card won’t be an issue as you are not using one.

Hi Arh,

I have had to unplug and move the unit a couple of times, and also while trying to run add ons that fail, I was advised to do a power cycle,
Before doing anything I run a backup.
but when I reboot it boots back to the initial HA setup page, allows me to run a restore, but will just end up back at the initial setup again,

I have the genuine Pi power adaptor from Pi Hut and installed HASO onto SSD rather than SD card as guided by the masses.

I have had some luck today in recovering last nights lost work, and I have again run a backup, but I just cant find anything that is preventing it from booting back to previous volume without resulting in losses.

It sounds like you are doing everything right, so I have no idea why things are not working out for you. I would save a backup to some external drive somewhere then go for a complete reimage of your SSD then restore the backup when you get to the landing page.

You need to shutdown the pi or restart HA properly from the developer tools - yaml page not just pull the plug, but i guess you are doing that.

No, I’m doing the reboot from the ui
I’ll set aback up file somewhere then do a fresh install on the ssd and try doing that.

Would you recommend saving a backup to an SD card, format the SSD and install a fresh HA through Pi Imager?

Doesn’t matter where you save the backup to as you just import it through your browser when the new install gets to the landing page.
