Northumbrian Water Smart Meter Integration

Hi all,

If you’re a Northumbrian Water customer with a smart meter, I’ve built a HACS integration that pulls your hourly usage into Home Assistant: ha-northumbrian-water

I’d been trying to get at my own meter data for a while. The NWL customer portal shows hourly readings, but there was no way to get them into HA, so I wrote something to do it.

What it does

  • Logs into the NWL portal with your normal website email and password, then finds your account, premise and meter on its own
  • Writes hourly consumption (litres) and cost directly into HA’s statistics, so each reading is on the hour it belongs to in the Energy dashboard’s water section.
  • The cost is NWL’s own figure for each hour, not a rate you have to type in yourself, so it stays right when the tariff changes
  • Adds sensors for the last full day’s usage and cost, plus a couple of diagnostic sensors (disabled by default) for when something looks off

Worth knowing

  • NWL publishes smart meter reads a day or two late and sometimes backfills hours. The integration refreshes every 6 hours and re-imports a rolling window (10 days by default, adjustable) to pick those up.
  • The BST/GMT clock changes are handled properly. The portal’s timestamps make this harder than you’d expect.
  • Costs are volumetric only. Standing charges aren’t included, so this isn’t a bill forecast.
  • It’s unofficial and relies on undocumented endpoints, so NWL could break it without warning.

Install

Open your Home Assistant instance and open this repository in HACS.

Full setup steps, including which statistics to pick in the Energy dashboard, are in the README.

It’s been running well on my setup, but I’ve only been able to test it on my own account, so I’d really like to hear from anyone else on Northumbrian Water. That includes people with more than one meter on a login, or anyone whose numbers don’t match the website. Issues and PRs are welcome on GitHub.
