Not enough free space?

Wasn’t sure which forum section this should be in, so I guessed…

I noticed that my Home Assistant needs a few updates. It did two of them: Home Assistant Supervisor and Home Assistant Operating System, but then when I tried to do Home Assistant Core, I was informed: Failed to perform the action update/install. Error updating Home Assistant Core: ‘HomeAssistantCore.update’ blocked from execution, not enough free space (1.8GB) left on the device

I followed the instructions to purge the database, but that did not free up any space. I have no backups to delete, so I rebooted the system, but same error.

When I moused over Used Space, it showed 4.5GB/6.6 GB. (More digging shows that my hardware is a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B/2GB.) Should I get a larger SD card? If so, can someone please point me to instructions for moving the data to the new card (so I do not have to redo everything).

Please suggest what I can do so that I can install the update. Thanks.

If that’s true, you have a tiny SD card. Minimum recommended is 32GB.

Moving is easy. Make a backup and move it to your primary computer. Setup your new SD card for a new install and put it in your Pi. During the onboarding process, restore your backup. All of this is documented on the HA website.

And if you’re not already, setup a backup solution that stores backups somewhere else in addition to your Pi.

SD cards fail. A lot
Consider another/larger storage option. I don’t use RasPi. Sorry i cannot recommend anything

  • Create a manual backup and download it somewhere off your HA server. Make sure it’s not encrypted.
  • Buy a 32 or 64GB SD card & install HA on it.
  • Restore your backup to the new card.
  • Throw away your old SD card.

All - Thanks for the replies. Just checked the prices on the MicroSD cards and (for someone like me who has been programming for 50+ years) the prices are insanely low - $11 for 64GB!

So, I figured I would try making a backup, but ran into a problem: From Settings->System->Backup, I tried configuring some stuff, but every time I clicked the Backup Now button, I was told ‘Failed to create backup’. What am I doing wrong???

I figured that maybe setting up a network location for storing the backup could be helpful, but I wasn’t sure exactly what to do. While poking around, I found that my Configurations.yaml file only has 12 lines, unlike an older version that has 120+ lines, including all of the devices, etc. Did I eff something up? (But note that my system works…)

NEVER buy cheap for mission-critical components. The cheap cards are often counterfeit cards or marginal performing cards.

Spend the money and buy directly from the manufacturer.

64Gb for $10 from SanDisk.

Like @tmjpugh, I don’t run Home Assistant on a Raspberry Pi.
