Odroid C4 and version 15

I have an Odroid C4. The other day, I went to install the version 15 update and my system completely crashed on me. Working through a bunch of random steps, I came to the conclusion that a file must have gotten corrupted during the update.

Thinking this was a great opportunity to redo everything, I decided to flash the 15 version with balenaEtcher. Got it put on my SD card and hooked up the ether and power…nothing. I actually went through this step about 5-6 times. Never could get it to work (wouldn’t boot)…actually acted like it wasn’t even downloading the OS files.

Decided to download the 14.2 version. Did all of the above steps and lo and behold it actually booted. I was then able to go into localhost and set everything up.

Saw I had the update to 15 available and decided I would download it. Guess what? Crashed the system and would not boot…again.

Decided to reflash the 14.2. Guess what? Works flawlessly and system is back up.

I’m guessing there might be a configuration problem (or some other issue) with the version 15 for the Odroid C4 and would recommend that people with this system only use the 14.2 software version until there is a proper fix.

Thanks,
EKMA

MaxK,

Thank you for this very in-depth explanation.

I think that the links for previous versions should be more readily accessible on the https://www.home-assistant.io/ website. As I stated in my previous post, I tried about 5 or 6 times to 15.0 to work. Only when I found the 14.2 and flashed it did everything go back to normal.

I realize that probably 99.9% of the users will never have an issue with the update to the OS. For those that do, better access to the previous versions would have been helpful. If only just a link to the repository of different versions. I know that it would have saved me some time if I hadn’t had to dig for a previous version.

Again though, thank you for this response.

Sincerely,
EKMA

Makie a backup copy of your SD card before every upgrade. That can save more time than searching for previous versions of components for a rebuild…and then doing a rebuild.

HA OS 15.1 is out with updates to fix reported issues: Release Home Assistant OS 15.1 · home-assistant/operating-system · GitHub.

I have an Odroid-N2+ that’s still on HAOS 14.2. To be honest I’m nervous about upgrading to 15.1 after the issues with 15. I don’t have a fallback plan nor am I knowledagble with the Odroid to create one. Where could I get the recipe for one that I could practice with? In the meantime I ordered a HA Green as a fallback device but they’re on preorder due to no stock at Ameridroid.com.

Is you system running on an SD card?

@MaxK No I have the eMMC model.

Search google for “how to clone eMMC”

@MaxK Thanks. I purchased a new eMMC and a USB Writer for it. With the tutorial on the HA site I can flash the eMMC and be good to go. If any of that is ever needed.

We have a HA Guide for the N2+ with instructions on how to flash the eMMC with HA “Home Assistant ODROID-N2+.docx - Google Docs” hopefully that is helpful.
